MATAURA NEWS

(From Our Correspondent.)

The fortnightly meeting of the Mataura Oddfellows’ Lodge, No. 40, 1.0.0. F., was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Thursday evening, when N.G. Bro. W. G. McLeod presided over a good attendance of members. Two propositions for membership were received and sustained by the meeting. The party of local Girl Guides who have been in camp at Waikawa during the last ten days returned home on Thursday after an extremely interesting and profitable time. While general Guide work occupied a greater portion of the time a good deal of pleasure was derived from hikes into the bush and to various beauty spots nearby. The campers were under the charge of Dr I. Woodhouse (commissioner) and Miss Nancy Hedley (captain). In the absence of the president, Mrs W. L. Scott, the first meeting of the year of the Mataura branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was presided over by Mrs W. Pryde. Prior to the usual business feeling reference was made to the death of Mrs G. Wassail, who had been associated with this branch, and a vote of condolence with her relatives was carried in the customary manner. As next meeting will be the anniversary of the formation of the branch it was resolved that members should suitably celebrate it on Feruary 4 when a musical programme will be given. To further supplement their funds towards the forthcoming contest expenses, members of the Mat aura Brass Band held a ball in the Mataura Horticultural Society’s Hall on Friday evening, there being a large attendance of townspeople as well as a good number of visitors from Invercargill, Gore and Wyndham, and as a result of this effort quite a satisfactory amount was raised towards this object. On behalf of the band, Mr J. F. Heslin (who also acted as M.C.) thanked those present for their attendance, and staled that the band would give a demonstration concert in the hall on Wednesday night next. The music for the dance was supplied by the Revellers’ Dance Orchestra, Invercargill, who gave their services gratuitously, which action was very much appreciated by the members of the local organization. Before a good attendance of bowlers at the local green on Friday evening a rink representing the Wyndham Bowling Club (Traynor (s), Hunter, Ross and Stark) defeated the present holders of the Eastern Cup (Cameron (s), J. Calder, W. Buchanan and John Buchanan) after a most exciting game, an extra'head having to be played to decide. The local representatives have withstood five challenges, and in handing over the cup to the visitors Mr T. J. Cameron heartily congratulated them on their victory and trusted they would hold it for some time also.
