A CLOUD BURST
CENTRAL, OTAGO DOWNPOUR.
GALLOWAY FLAT INUNDATED.
(Per United Press Association.)
Dunedin, December 19.
A terrific cloud-burst at Earnsclcugh Flat yesterday did much damage. Down the ridges of Blackman’s Gully the water rushed in torrents, carrying away fences and scouring out the orchards. Water entered Mr Kinraid’s house by the back door and passed out through the front door. The house had to be vacated. Washouts on the railway and the roads are also reported. In some orchards the whole of the soil was washed away. A large portion of the Galloway Flat is under water. Blackman’s Creek changed its course and is now flowing through a lucerne paddock.
At the height of the thunderstorm on Friday night the cannonade was alarming and the tropical downpour soon converted the parched countryside into a sheet of water. Though much damage has been done there will be compensation to graziers in the fresh start given to pastures.
