SATURDAY’S GAMES I.C.C. DECISIVELY DEFEAT MARIST UNION AND APPLEBY WIN JUNIOR PLAYER’S CENTURY Freshened by Friday’s welcome rains, grounds were again in good order for the resumption of club cricket competitions on Saturday afternoon. Weather conditions were warm and all round the playing conditions were ideal. The fourth series of senior games in the first round were concluded and resulted in wins for Invercargill (8 points), Appleby (5 points) and Union (5 points). As the result o» .these games High School (two losses) still lead in the championship, with Appleby (one loss) second and Marist (one loss) third. Following is the position of teams: — Points. High School 22 Appleby 21 Marist 18 Union 16 Invercargill 16 Bluff 3 There were no games played in the Junior A section. In the third grade game Collegiate B v. Borstal Dawson, a Collegiate player, scored 131 runs. APPLEBY v. HIGH SCHOOL This game was concluded on the Showgrounds and resulted in a first innings win for Appleby by 50 runs. On the first day Appleby scored 221 runs and High School had lost two wickets for SI. Resuming on Saturday K. Uttley and Spence, the not out men, added only one run when Spence was caught in the slips off Johnson. Uttley and Rodger made a good stand and improved School’s position considerably by taking the score to 129. At this stage, Uttley, who had batted soundly, played one from McGowan rm to his wicket. The retiring batsman added 30 to his not out innings of the previous week and was instrumental in holding up the Appleby attack at a time when the chances of the game favoured School. He was dropped by McGowan at 30 and.later survived a confident appeal for a catch behind the wickets. After Uttley’s departure the Appleby bowlers got on top and despite poor fielding accounted for the remaining six wickets for 40 runs. School totalled 170. Appleby batted a second time and were dismissed for 122 ami with little more than half an hour to play School put on 70 for the loss of four wickets. A feature of the afternoon’s play was the bright and clean fielding of the School team. Messrs W. A. H. Oliver and R. G. Hallamore were the umpires. Following are details:— APPLEBY. INVERCARGILL v. MARIST Invercargill secured a decisive win over Marist by nine wickets and thus gained the distinction of being the first team to defeat Marist. Continuing their innings on Saturday, Invercargill took their score to 179, 50 in advance of Marist’s first innings total. Gilbertson (43) again batted consistently and was the last Invercargill man to be dismissed. McMillan (Marist) was the most successful bowler, his five wickets costing 12 runs each. Marist batted a second time, but again failed to reproduce their early season form and were dismissed for 124. This left Invercargill 75 to get to secure an outright win, a feat which was accomplished with the lees of one wicket and half an hour to spare. Tapley came to light with a dashing knock of 41, compiled with 10 scoring shots. He hit seven fours, two sixes and a single. Pollok (28) also showed good batting form. Messrs A. V. Poole and J. UNION v. BLUFF At Bluff the home team put up a good showing against Union and kept the visitors from securing the outright win which other senior teams have inflicted against them this season. Faced with the good total of 235 by Union and the loss of two wickets for 19 runs, Bluff continued their first innings and went on to 209 before the last man was dismissed. Seven batsmen secured double figures. At one stage—l7o on for six wickets —the prospects of Bluff overhauling Union’s total were bright, but the eighth and ninth wickets fell cheaply and gave Union the upper hand. Hutchinson top-scored with 50, including four sixes and four fours. I. Parry was not out with 43— a good innings. Union won on the first innings by 26 runs. Details :— UNION. SECOND GRADE B SECTION. BLUFF DEFEAT OLD BOYS. Bluff 95 (Vincent 38 not out, Walker 23, Denny 11) defeated Old Boys 71 (Mackie 39, Luzmoor 10) and 76 for six wickets (Boyce 36, Carswell 27 not out) on the first innings by 24 runs. Bowling for Bluff Tait took three wickets for 23 runs, Long one for 10, Deans five for 15 and one for 16, Nixey one for 0, four for 24, Phillipson one for 4. Bowling for Old Boys Wilson took five for 35, Boyce one for 14, McFarlane two for 20, Henderson one for 8, Carswell one for 14. COLLEGIAL v, UNION. Collegiate batted first, making 202 (Ferguson 56, Thom 38, Pay 23, Dunlop 21, Stewart 17 not out). Bowling for Union Woodward took three for 42 and Tayles four for 67. THIRD GRADE BORSTAL DEFEAT COLIJSGIATE B. DAWSON SCORES A CENTURY. - Borstal, 212 for seven wickets (declared) defeated Collegiate B 173 (Dawson 131, Campbell 17) by 39 runs. Bowling for Collegiate, Dawson took three for 27, Campbell two for 42, IL Jones one for 27, Marshall one for 27. Four main contributors in Borstal’s innings scored 94, 55, 26 and 12. A Borstal boy took four wickets for 38. Dawson played a dashing innings. He gave only one chance, and included in his score were one six and 14 fours. APPLEBY DEFEAT TECHNICAL. Appleby 123 (Dawson 43, Swan 30, Jack Calvert 17) and 108 for two wickets declared (Dawson 56 not out, E. Calvert 31 not out, Swan 13) defeated Technical 70 (Morrison 35, Webb 11) and 49 (Peddie 17, Morrison 14) by 112 runs. Bowling for Technical Morrison took two for 11 and one for 21, Webb one for 19, Maxted five for 35, Bolger one for 9, Dixon one for 17. The fifth series of senior cricket championship matches commenced in fine weather and on easy wicket on Saturday. Good bowling by Cousins (five for 85) and Blundell (four for 58) saw Hutt dismissed for 192 (McGirr 45, Aldersley 30). Wellington lost five wickets for 97 runs. Old Boys scored 310 for nine wickets (Dempster 106, McGuire 69, Moore 39 not out, Bull 37) against Institute (Henderson four Xor 72, Lambert four for 96). Kilbimie totalled 310 (Ward 66, Crook 64 not out, Hepburn 53) against University (39 for no wickets). Midland ran up 242 (Tendill 69, Lawton 49, Dustin 32, Standidge 31) against Petone (36 for two wickets). Hope took five wickets for 50 runs for Petone and Brice four for 78. SHEFFIELD SHIELD MATCH GILBERT’S BOWLING QUESTIONED. (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) Melbourne, December 19. There was a sensation in the Sheffield Shield match when Gilbert, the Queensland aboriginal bowler, was no-balled eight times in two overs. The umpire declared that he had thrown the ball. A controversy whether Gilbert throws the ball or not has been raging in cricket circles all the season.
