UNEMPLOYMENT

THE RELIEF DEPOT. Saturday morning at the Central Relief Depot was very busy and many applications for foodstuffs for the week-end were dealt with. Donations of meat were received at the depot for the week-end and relieved the drain on the committee’s resources for cash purchases to meet the demand. The depot has now been in existence for nine weeks and the statistics which have been compiled by the secretary (Mr L. Harrison Jones), for this period show that the depot has been of very material assistance to many families which have suffered distress. The following are the latest returns supplied by Mr Jones.

N.B.—Six new families with a total number of 32 people were supplied during the week. The new arrangement that the depot should be open from 9.30 a.m. to noon each day and not in the afternoon is working quite satisfactorily. Saturday morning is always the busiest time at the depot and last Saturday was no exception, the supplies of meat which had been purchased being just sufficient to supply those who called up to 12 o’clock. Further donations have been received as follows: —Miss Blaikie, Crinan street, carcass of lamb; J. L. Hannon and Co, parcel of meat; Mrs D. Cuthbertson, 5/- weekly for the purchase of bread; “Anonymous” bag of potatoes, parcel of bread; Messrs Deegan Bros, Oreti Plains, two bags of turnips.
