ALLEGED THEFT

VALUABLE JEWELLERY. MOTOR DRIVER ARRESTED. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, August 22. Arrested in one of the city skating rinks last evening, Arthur Roberts, aged 28, a motor driver, appeared before Mr MciNeil, S.M., in the Court to-day on a charge of stealing two suit-cases containing jewellery and clothing of a total value of £lOOO, the property of Sladen and Son, wholesale jewellers, Christchurch. He was remanded until the 28th. It is understood the jewellery was stolen from one of the firm’s travellers who left the suitcases in a car in Harris street while he was absent for a few minutes. Roberts had a quantity of valuable jewellery sewn into his clothing when arrested, it was stated, and more jewellery was discovered after the subsequent theft.
