TAXI STANDS.
To the Editor.
Sir, —The action of the City Council in refusing to grant a taxi stand to the Singer Taxis Ltd. is quite a puzzle to many ratppayers. The stand is available and is listed as one of those from which the city may derive a revenue of £l3 per year. No reason has been given for the refusal although the stand is apparently under offer at the above rental to any other approved applicant other than the Singer Company. This stand was occupied up till January of this year and has not been withdrawn from the list of stands available for taxicabs. Why has the Singer Company been singled out for exclusive treatment? What influences have been brought to bear on his Worship and other members of the council which has had a determining effect on their decision? Have they any right to throw away revenue in these hard times for no obvious reason whatever? What is at. the back of this attempt to keep a company off the streets who have reduced the charges outside the borough boundary? If this is the way in which his Worship is commencing his term of office he cannot complain if the citizens regard as insincere his pre-election professions that he would give favour to none. —I am, etc., ALPHA.
