HORTICULTURE

NEW ZEALAND ' INSTITUTE. ANNUAL MEETING OF BRANCH. The annual meeting of the Southland branch of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture was held in the Southland League Rooms last evening. The president (Mr C. S. Longuet) occupied the chair. In moving the adoption of the annual report, (already published) and balancesheet, the president dealt with the question of scenic reserves. He said that 27 honorary inspectors had been appointed to guard beauty spots and that should act as a deterrent on would-be destroyers of birds and flowers. The report showed that a successful year had been passed and everyone had done their best.

The motion was seconded by Mr A. Smith and carried.

The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: President, Mr C. S. Longuet (re-elected) ; vice-presidents, Mr J. B. Thomson and Dr. J. G. Macdonald (re-elected); secretary and treasurer, Mr G. Broughton; assistant secretary, Mr H. J. Pennington; executive committee, Messrs H. J. Pennington, J. Bayne, G. Jaquiery, C. N. Lawless, P. Plumer and J. A. McPherson.
