WATERSIDE WORKERS

REFUSE TO WORK OVERTIME. VESSELS DELAYED AT LYTTELTON. (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, June 26. The Lyttelton Watersidera’ Union surprised local shipping companies late yesterday afternoon by refusing to work any overtime after 5 o’clock, thus delaying a number of vessels in port overnight. It was the general opinion of persons connected with shipping that the action of the watersidera was a protest against the recent cut in wages. FURTHER MINOR HITCHES. Christchurch, June 26. Further minor hitches occurred on the Lyttelton waterfront to-day. It is the practice of the shipping companies when they wish to expedite the departure of a vessel to work during the meal hours. Today the men refused to accept this work. To-night, however, overtime was worked as usual. “IRRITATION TACTICS.” Wellington, June 26. From rumours current in shipping circles it is understood that the waterside workers will decline to work overtime after midday to-morrow. Two Saturdays ago the watersidera in Wellington refused to work overtime. Last Saturday they worked here, but refused to work in Auckland. It is believed that these apparently regulated holdups are in the nature of irritation tactics as a protest against wage cuts.
