UNEMPLOYMENT
LEVY ON RETURNED SOLDIERS. BOARD CRITICIZED. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, June 23. Criticism of the Unemployment Board's attitude with reference to returned soldiers was made at ’the returned soldiers’ conlercnce. Mr Lloyd, Christchurch, said it had been laid down that single men in receipt of a war pension of £1 a week were not entitled to receive employment under the relief scheme. The position was that those men could not get two days’ work a week, yet they had to pay-seven and six a quarter. The only person exempt from the levy was the pensioner permanently disabled and in receipt of a full pension. A pensioner could make application for relict Irom Hie payment, but it was doubtful it it would be granted. If it were, the applicant would not be entitled to any worK at all. RELIEF WORK INCREASE IN LEVY FAVOURED. Nelson, June 23. A public meeting at Nelson passed a resolution that the unemployment levy be increased on incomes over £390 on a graduated scale, giving the unemployed a days work per week extra all round and aiso that work be of a productive or land settlement nature. - A strong committee was set up to deal with all cases of local distress.
