DAVID’S TESTIMONY.

In the early stages of his speech at Mataura, Mr David McDougall, referring to Mr Hargest’s remark that Mr Coates was a much slandered man, said he had

not heard a statement directed against Mr Coates’s moral character in the House. His policy and his. administration had been criticised, but every public man was criticised at times. Personally, he found Mr Coates to be a “jolly good fellow” outside of politics.

Inside the House where the members know him Mr Coates could not be the subject of these attacks, but it is common knowledge that vicious attacks are made through whispering outside of the House, by people who poison the minds of those who do not know him personally. Mr McDougall is not the only member opposed to Mr Coates in politics who has made it clear that the whispered criticisms of the Reform leader are without foundation and spring from political animosity.
