OHAI NOTES
ANGLERS’ CLUB ANNUAL SOCIAL. (From Our Correspondent.) The annual social evening of the Ohai Anglers’ Club took place in the Public Hall on Friday, when a large gathering of anglers, their wives and friends patronized this popular annual event. Visitors were present from Invercargill, Nightcaps and Riverton, also a representative from Waikihu and members of the Southland Acclimatization Society. Mr D. Cameron, a vice-president of the club, was in the chair. Mr J. Harvey's orchestra, of Invercargill, played several selections, and rendered items in connection with the programme. The chairman apologized for the absence of the patron of the club, Mr W. J. A. McGregor, who was indisposed, and also for the president, Mr W. Excell, who was detained on business.
Mr J. Robertson, president of the Southland Acclimatization Society, presented the prizes, and congratulated the winners on their skill, making special mention to the enthusiasm shown by youthful members of the club. The prize-list was as follows: — Labour Day competition, October 20, first prize, gold medal, donated by Mr W. Excel! (president), was awarded to Mr D. Nichol for heaviest bag, 12 fish, 171 b 12ozs; second prize, trophy, value £1 1/-, donated by the S.A.S., to Mr I. Talbot, for largest number of fish; third prize, trophy valued at 10/6, presented by the club, to Mr S. Giles for heaviest fish, 2lbs llozs.
Boys’ Competition: First prize, for heaviest fish, to Master Jim Lambert, three fish, 21bs 14ozs. Roving competition, held January 25, first prize, for heaviest bag, gold medal donated by Mr W. J. A. McGregor, to Mr J. Dodds, five fish, lOlbs 8ozs; second prize, for largest number of fish; reel donated by Messrs A. and W. McCarthy, to Mr F. W. Snarkes, 6 fish; third prize, for heaviest fish, trophy valued at 10/6, donated by Mr J. Edmond, of Invercargill, to Mr John Smeaton, fish weighing 21bs 7ozs. Boys’ competition, heaviest bag to Master E. Ross, 3 fish, 31bs 3ozs. During the evening Mr J. Robertson gave an interesting address on research work now being carried out by the council. He wishes to impress on all anglers to send the scales of the fish caught in envelopes provided for this purpose as it would greatly assist in the matter. Items were rendered by the following:— Pianoforte solo, Mr J. Thompson; recitation, Mr W. Cockburn; violin solo, Mr R. Dell; concertina solo: Mr H. Kilburn; flute solo, Mr J. Harvey, Junr.; Cornet solo, Mr E. Hunter; selection, Harvey’s orchestra. A happy evening was concluded by the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.”
