SINGLE UNEMPLOYED.

To the Editor.

Sir, —In reply to Mr W. Couser, who showed such a kind and sympathetic consideration at the Southland Executive of the Farmers’ Union on Saturday towards the single unemployed men, I would like to remind this kind gentleman that during the war society made it quite plain that single men should go first and die lot their country. We have with us to-day a great many of returned men in the ranks of the unemployed, out of work through not fault of their own, but through a faulty social system. Therefore, I say if it was right and proper to fight and die for their country it is more important today that they shall live for their country and not be allowed to die of starvation. I will also remind this kind gentleman that people who commit some crime or break the law in some way, are better off being entertained at one of H.M. Households than some of us for they are housed, clothed and fed and great care! taken of them. The way many of the people are situated to-day they have no such guarantee.—l am, etc., W.S. Ex Service Man. Invercargill, June 22, 1931.
