FRENCH NAVY
ESTIMATES 'REDUCED. LARGE BATTLESHIP ABANDONED. (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) (Rec. 8.15 p.m.) Paris, June 18. The Chamber of Deputies adopted by 410 votes to 168 the estimates for the 1931-32 naval programme, the Government accepting an amendment halving the proposed credit and suspending the laying down of a proposed battleship of 23,000 tons. M. Paul Boncoar, on behalf of the Socialists, criticized the battleship. He said that France need not be afraid because Germany had launched the Deutschland. Italy could build a 23,000 ton battleship saying she w'as responding to France’s initiative and France would be unable to take a bold line at the disarmament conference if weighted down by the battleship. The Minister of Marine (M. Dumont), said the adoption of the battleship would not limit the possibilities of the discussion on disarmament. M. Harriot resigned the .leadership of the Radical Socialists owing to forty of his followers voting against the Government on the Naval Bill contrary to his instructions.
