ACTRESS BURNT
EXPLOSION OF GAS HEATER. (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) New York, June 12. A message from Weston (Connecticut) states that Miss Eva Le Galliene, founder, director and leading woman of New York’s famous Civic Repertory Theatre, Josephine Hutchinson, a member of her company, and a maid servant were burned as a result of the explosion of a gas heater in Miss Le Gallienne’s country home when she attempted to heat water to give her dog a bath. Miss Le Galliene was removed to a hospital where she will remain for a lengthy period. It is feared she will be scarred from serious burns to her face, hair, shoulders, arms, chest and thighs. Eva Le Galliene, daughter of Richard Le Galliene, the poet and novelist, was born in London in 1899, and made her first appearance on the stage in London in 1915. A few months later she went to New York. A few years ago she established the New York Civic Repertory Theatre, which is famous in America for the quality of its productions of the literary drama. Miss le Gallienne 4 ih May closed her theatre and departed on a year’s holiday, intending to visit Europe, before resuming her stage activities in 1932.
