VAGRANT VERSE

THE ORETI ANTHOLOGY. / 394.—We Should Make. (Written for the Southland Times.) That we should make something Is our desire — Something beyond the traffic of to-day, Beyond the mire That lies about us, and within. Our dreams are dead, Qur visions do not glow, nor stir to flame, Desire itself is fled. We dare not give a glory to our land, But hail the old, Crude destinies men toiled for long ago: Power, rest, and gold Is our sole dream, a weary gift from them, The plodding pioneers, But they give nothing more, they are lost now, Too futile even for tears. Let’s have a vision greater than the past’s, A flame to -tower Along the highway of our idle days, A splendid power To raise us up to something not ourselves, A passion fine The quintessence of visions close to truth, This yours and mine. Southerner. Invercargill, June 14, 1931.
