W.C.T.U.
SOUTHLAND DISTRICT. The quarterly meeting of the Southland District W.C.T.U. was held in St. John’s Hall on Wednesday, June 10. Mrs McGregor, president, was in the chair. The morning devotions were taken by Mrs Holmes, who based her remarks on a study of the life of Joshua and urged members to go forward with courage and faith in good work. The roll-call was taken and the following unions responded: North, Central, South Invercargill, Gore, Bluff, Riverton, Winton, Orepuki, Ryal Bush and Edendale. An apology was received from Otautau. Mrs McKinnon, evangelical superintendent, gave a detailed account of the weekly prayer meeting to be held in First Church Hall, upstairs, every- Monday evening at 7.30 p.m. the Ministers’ Association, N.Z. Alliance and the Invercargill W.C.T.U.’s to be responsible for carrying it on. All members were urged to attend. The president offered to supply any branch with literature, cards, and pamphlets for window displays if they so wished.
Mrs Brewins asked members to form a Birthday League, members to pay 1/- a year to the funds for mercies received. Mrs Cole emphasized the need for improved Birthday Cards and the following motion was passed: “That more suitable verses for inscription on the cards might be found and*?hat suggestions be invited for improvements in the cards.” It was decided to send a letter of sympathy to Miss Smith, D.U. Treasurer, at present laid aside through illness. Miss Birss then proposed the following motion and asked all Unions to take note and send representatives to their member: “That the quarterly meeting of Southland W.C.T.U. District Union representing fourteen unions heartily approves of the Religious Instruction in Primary Schools Enabling Bill and trusts that it will be carried through Parliament this year.” The morning session closed with the President pronouncing the Benediction. The devotions at the afternoon meeting were taken by Mrs Fretwell. The different unions then gave expression to their plans of work tor the year. Most of them had plans in hand. The resolutions were all passed without discussion. A solo, “The End of a Perfect Day” was most acceptably rendered by Mrs D. H. Thompson. After afternoon tea was served a very fine and interesting address was given by the Rev. Mackintosh Carter on "Temperance.” Miss Simon rendered beautifully “I’m sure I shall not pass this Way- Again,” and “God be with you till we meet again” was sung and the Benediction by Mrs McKinnon brought the meeting to a close.
