WYNDHAM NEWS
(From Our Correspondent.) On Thursday the local branch of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union held a very successful cake and produce stall in McKay’s Buildings, the proceeds being in aid of the Wyndham Plunket ~and Rest Room. The proceeds amounted to £7 odd, with expenses very small. Those in charge of the stall were Mesdames William Scott (Redan), W. G. Leckie (Redan), Wm. Hunter (Redan), R. G. Carson (Wyndham) and Miss F. McEwan (Wyndham). The annual meeting of the congregation of St. Mary’s Anglican Church was held on Monday evening, in the Athenaeum, the Vicar, Rev. J. A. Simpson, presiding over a medium attendance of parishioners. The balance sheet showed a credit balance of £4 3/6. The adoption of the document was formally moved by Mr L. Harley and seconded by Mr C. E. Davey. After discussion on the financial position of the parish, the adopting motion was carried unanimously. It was resolved on the motion of Mr Harley, seconded by Mr S. Rice, that the Wyndham Vestry committee consist of five, the following being elected Messrs L. Harley, S. Rice, C. E. Davey, W. F. Bennettd and F. Williams. It was resolved that Mr Harley be appointed secretary and treasurer and Mr Rice auditor. The Vicar stated that his ministry, so far, had been a very happy one, everything appearing to be going along smoothly. He had been turning over, in his mind, what was the best to be done for the young people of the church. An attempt had been unsuccessfully made to start a boys’ Bible Class, and he now hoped to arrange a combined Bible Class for boys and girls, to be held on Tuesday evenings. In reference to the hours of worship, he considered that if the evensong services were commenced half an hour earlier, they would then be able to hold evening devotions at both Edendale and Wyndham every Sunday. His arrival in Wyndham had been made very happy on account of the kindly reception of Mrs Simpson and himself. The vicarage was in good order and everything had been made easy for them. In conclusion he asked the members to cooperate and work harmoniously together in the good of their Church. The weekly meeting of the Wyndham Branch of the W.E. Association was held in the Masonic Hall on Wednesday evening, and attended by a good number of members.
The evening was devoted to the reading of the play R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots) a translation from the Czech of a play written by Karel Capek. The various characters were taken by the following: Mr C. E. Da”»v (Harry’ Domain), Mr D. Richardson (Fabry), Mr William Tuck (Dr. Gall), Mr R. Osbourne (Dr. Helman), Mr S. G. August (Jacob Berman), Miss P. Munro (Alquist), Miss L. A. Marsh (Helena Glory), Mrs W. T. Sheehan (Emma), Miss Ayson (Sulla a Robot), Mr A. Anderson (Primus, a Robot) t Mr R. Anderson (Radius, a Robot), Miss Baird (Helena, a Robotess), The stage directions were read by Miss Hay. The next meeting will be held on June 24, when Mr G.
