THE UNDERGROUND RAILWAYS.

Rugby, May 1. By a large majority the shareholders in the London Underground Group approved of the proposed terms upon which the companies will be acquired under a scheme for the co-ordination of London passenger transport under a public board appointed b\ r the Minister of Transport. The terms were strongly recommended by the president, Lord Ashfield, who in replying to criticisms pointed out that the proposed board would be quite free from political interference. Negotiations are also in progress between the Transport Ministry and other undertakings involved in the scheme. It is estimated that the Underground Group has carried nearly 2,200,000,000 passengers each year. TRACKING THE CRIMINAL. (British Official Wireless.) Rugby, May 1. Following the recent establishment of a police motor patrol equipped with fast cars and motor-cycles to deal with road offenders it is announced that the Thames River police whose duties include the protection of valuable cargoes on vessels anchored in the river are to have motor boats capable of the highest speeds and equipped with wireless to enable close co-operation with the shore police.

CENSUS TAKERS QUIT.
London, May 1
The Registrar-General reveals that of 40,000 enumerators employed in taking the census, including 12,000 unemployed, 2000 defaulted, some in the middle of the work, without explanation. The prosecution of the worst offenders is contemplated.
