SOUTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. SOUTHLAND COMPETITORS. There was no play in the South Island tennis championship tournament at Dunedin on Friday, but on Saturday the courts were kept going throughout the day. Southland was fairly well represented. The following are the results of matches in which local players are engaged:— In the men’s singles championship McLeod beat Douglas 6—2, 6—3 and A. J. Deaker beat G. Sumpter 6—o, 6—4. Hughes waS beaten by Guy 6—o, 6* —1 and McLeod in the second round went down to McDougall 6 —l, 6 —3. In the-ladies’ singles championship'Miss Melvin beat Miss Litten 6—2, 6—l, Miss Wade beat Miss Reilly 4—6, 6—2, 6 —2, and Miss Mahoney was beaten by Miss Miller, the Otago champion, 6—o, 6—l. In the boys’ junior’ singles Strang was beaten 6—5, 6—5, but Baird still survives. Deaker and Moody and Baird arid Diithie won their first rourid matches in the doubles championship. Argentina eliminated Uruguay in the South American zone Davis Cup. contest on Saturday, advancing to the final against Chile. Argentina won the doubles after capturing two singles.
