The new Beaumont hotel was opened on Friday. The old building, which had been erected over 50 years ago, was destroyed by fire last year. A large number of residents gathered at the hotel, and Mr D. McLennan congratulated Mr Pearson on the handsome building which had replaced the old one. Mr Woods presented Mrs Pearson with a gold key, and she also received a handsome vase as a memento of the opening day. After the opening of the hotel, a toast list was gone through as follows: “Mr and Mrs E. Pearson,” proposed by Mr D. McLennan; “Mr and Mrs D. Jones,” proposed by Mr Revie; “The Builders,” proposed by Mr Hewitson. After being shown through the hotel Mr and Mrs Jones entertained many guests at dinner, and in the evening a dance was held in the Coronation Hall.
The local branch of the Women’s Division held a progressive euchre party and dance in the Town Hall on Wednesday evening, Misses Shepherd and Blamires were equal for the ladies’ prize, 7 games each, and in the draw for the prize, a crystal vase, Miss Blamires won. Mr H. J. Hay won the men’s prize, a box of handkerchiefs. Mrs Wylie and Mr A. Hancox won the consolation prizes. After supper, dancing was indulged in to music supplied by the Tapanui Orchestra, Miss D. Rodger and Mr Dumbleton kindly played extras. Mr Munyard acted as M.C. The concert and dance held at Heriot on Friday night in aid of the Earthquake Relief Fund was very well attended. The takings amounted to £3B 10/6. The “Heriot Revue” company rendered choruses and ballets very effectively, solos were sung by Miss Myers (Kaitangata), Miss Jolly (Dunedin), elocutionary items, Mr Harle, violin solo, Miss Gwen Sim; Indian dance, Misses J. Nelson and A. Stuart step dancing; and Messrs Shelton and Paterson (Gore) humorous items. Supper was supplied by the Heriot Women’s Institute. Dancing was kept up till the early hours, music being supplied by Smart’s Orchestra, and Mr K. Kidd acting as M.C. On Monday evening the returned soldiers of Tapanui held a meeting in the Courier office to make arrangements for the Anzac Day service. It was agreed to co-operate with the Borough Council and local ministers and to invite Mr E. J. Anderson, Dunedin, vice-president N.Z.R.S.A., to give an address. Ihe Whisky Gully , Reserve Committee met on Monday evening, Mr W. R. Quin in the chair. Mr D. Keir was appointed hon. caretaker. It was resolved to make some slight improvements to the amusements at the guliy. Mr J. A. McDonald was nominated as a meufber of committee, subject to his consent. Crops, which are fully a month late this season, are now being harvested, but in some parts of the district, the oats are still very green. It is reported that some wheat crops in the Crookston district near (he Blue Mountains, have been affected by frost, which will affect the yield. This is a very unusual occurrence in the district.
