RIVERTON RACING CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. CAMISADER WINS THE CUP. GREAT WESTERN TO DEPORTMENT. MASTER ANOMALY BEATS SPRINTERS. STEEPLECHASER DESTROYED. HEAVY MACHINE DECREASE. The annual meeting of the Riverton Raeing Club opened on Saturday in fine weather, but a keen wind was in evidence. The track was' holding at the commencement, but under the influence of a strong sun and continuous attention by the caretaker, improved as the day wore on. It should be in good order to-day. The racing throughout was keen and interesting and the two leading events, the Cup and Great Western Steeplechase were fine contests. Followers of favourites had a bad day and some large dividends were returned. This, coupled’ with the fact that the attendance was a good deal smaller than last year, did not help the club to keep up its returns and the totalisator showed a decrease of £6,583 on the first day of last year, the figures being £14,560 10/- against £21,143 10/-. The gate returns, too, showed a decided drop. Last year the sum of £1,440 13/- was handled compared with £9BO 2/6 this year, a decrease of £460 10/6. It was a bad day for the club. There was a good deal of what appeared to be unnecessary delay during the day and the programme was not concluded until nearly an hour after scheduled time. The judge, Mr A. Macaulay, recorded his decisions promptly while Mr A. D. Mclvor effected some fine starts. He was condemned in some quarters for lining the horses up at the barrier too early, but his critics overlooked the fact that in every race in which he was criticized, the interval between the time the signal was hoisted for the closing of the totalisator and the all clear one was given, was very lengthy. It is admitted that there were some large fields to handle, but the wholesale criticism of Mr Mclvor was not deserved. The new secretary, Mr G. B. Banks, and his staff was kept very busy, and acquitted themselves well.

The Riverton Cup proved a veritable triumph for the Wingatui mentor 0. Gieseler as the winner and runner-up were both produced from his stable. Southland can derive some satisfaction from the fact that Camisader was ridden by the Western District born G. Humphries. The win was very popular despite the fact that five other runners were considered to hold better chances than Camisader. Other Wingatuitrained horses that have won the Cup are: Emmaline (1897), Decoy (18981, Juniper (1899), Tirgela (1903 and 1904), Gapon (1911), Ardenvhor (1916), Marea (1918), Thaddeus (1919), Hard Hit (1921), Corn Rigs (1922), Loughrea (1924), Kilfane (1925), Ravenna (1926), Circulation (1928) and Wingatui (1929). It was the best" field that has contested the cup for some years. The pleasure of the day was marred somewhat early for in the second event, the Waiau Steeplechase, Mr J. Butler’s Miss Joycie fell at the water jump and broke both of her hind legs. A friendly bullet quickly ended her suffering. It was distinctly unfortunate that the incident occurred right in front of the crowded grandstand, but with commendable promptitude the feelings of the public were set aside and the act of mercy performed. At the conclusion of the Gold Cup race, the handsome trophy was handed to Mr P. Treacy, of Outram, owner of Camisader, by Mrs C. H. Gordon. The president (Dr. C. H. Gordon) said that in this year of depression, it had been particularly pleasing to the executive of the club to see the various races on the programme so well filled, more especially in view of the fact that the club had kept the stakes up to the highest amount possible. The large number of acceptors and the class of horses entered in the race just run had been a great attraction to the sporting public of Southland and the promise of a fine race had been fully borne out. He congratulated Mr Treacy and the trainer (Mr C. Gicseler) and the jockey (G. Humphries) on their success and Mrs Gordon then handed over the cup amid enthusiastic cheering. THRILLING STEEPLECHASE. SOME BIG DIVIDENDS. For the Trial Handicap Royal Limond was favourite, having one hundred and one friends more than The Smuggler, who was one hundred and twenty-two tickets ahead of Tippling. Segrave was one hundred and five fancies away. The pool totalled £1337 against £1866 last year. From a good start, Huida got chopped out and Tippling, Slim Jim and Chainman were first to break the line. Before going far Segrave rushed to the front from Slim Jim and Tippling and they raced down the back in this order with Some Breeze, Chainman, Royal Limond, Glenham Lark and Tlie Smuggler following. At the far turn Segrave and Slim Jim were just clear of Royal Limond and Tippling with The Smuggler next. Around the top The Smuggler moved up and into the straight the order was Slim Jim, Segrave, Royal Limond, Tippling and The Smuggler. The latter got a run on the rails. At the distance Segrave and Tippling had enough and The Smuggler tackled Royal Limond and Slim Jim. Royal Limond was beaten 100 yards from home and in a good finish The Smuggler (L. J. Ellis), beat Slim Jim (T. Metcalf) by threequarters of a length. Royal Limond (B. Brodie) was two and a-half lengths away, three lengths ahead of Tippling (F. Voight). Then came Rombeau (J. McChesney), Glenham Lark (G. Humphries), and Segrave (A. E. Didham) in a bunch. Time, Imin 33sec. The Smuggler went a fine race and did not appear to be all out. He was allowed to find his feet and smothered the opposition at the finish. ife was well handled. Slim Jim returned a price into double figures for second and his was a good performance. These two were the only ones running on at the finish, but Tippling was not knocked about. .Royal Limond had every chance and Segrave failed badly in the straight.

The Waiau Steeplechase saw Koremata elected a strong favourite, having two hundred and thirty friends more than Silvern who had sixty-three tokens more than Glenboa. The pool totalled £1,252 10/against £1,726 10/- last year. Silvern and Miss Joycie were slow to move and Koremata led Paris to the first of the doubles where Terehu and Polling Day refused. Koremata went on well clear from Calham and at the next fence Glenboa and. Bloom lost their riders. There was no change until the water jump was reached. Here Miss Joycie fell heavily. She was unable to get up and was later destroyed. Koremata, Paris, Calham and Silvern were now the only ones left standing. At the double in the back, Paris, Calham and Silvern each had a life. Koremata hud a good lead, but Paris and Calham set out after him and caught him at the fence jumping into the course proper. Paris took off just in front of Koremata and the latter hit hard and lost his rider. Paris (G. Dempster) was left with a good lead and he held it to the finish, beating

Calham (E. Mackie) by six lengths Silvern (V. Langford) was twelve lengths back, these being the only three to finish. Time, 4min 42sec. Faris lost ground at almost every fence, but had too much pace for the others. When Koremata fell his task was an easy one. Koremata looked like being an easy winner until he fell at the log fence which brought about his downfall last year. Silvern got round but did not show much pace. When Miss Joycie fell, she broke both hind legs.

Master Anomaly was an easy favourite for the Aparima Handicap, having one hundred and thirty friends more than Waving Corn with Full Fling ninety tokens away, thirty odd ahead of Arikinui. The pool read at £1,721 10/- against £3,042 last year. From a good start Red Boa, Master Anomaly and Full Fling were first to break the line, but before going far Master Anomaly went to the front and led down the back from Red Boa, Waving Corn and Full Fling. There was no change at the far turn, but around the top Full Fling was last. Into the straight Master Anomaly led Red Boa, Arikinui and Waving Corn. Master Anomaly (A. Eastwood) held off a strong challenge by Red Boa (C. Pope) to beat him- by half a length. Full Fling (L. J. Ellis) put in a good run in the straight, and was two lengths away third, followed by Arikinui (S. Wilson) and Waving Corn (B. Brodie). Time, Imin 18sec.

Master Anomaly led practically from end to end and scored nicely. Red Boa went a fine race and was always in second place. Full Fling was well back entering the straight but finished strongly. Arikinui and Waving Corn failed to impress.

The Longwood Hack Handicap was run in two divisions and Sailing Home was elected favourite, having two hundred and fifty friends more than Banner Boy, who was forty ahead of Steeton. The pool totalled £1,498 against £2,493 last year. In the first division Steeton was slow to find her feet and Toreador was first out from Sailing Home, Jock (THazeldean and Totolomai. They raced down the back without material change but at the far turn Toreador led from Vinegrove, Sailing Home and Steeton. The field bunched around the top and into the straight Toreador led Vinegrove, Sailing Home, Totolomai and Steeton. Toreador (G. Barclay) held his own in the run home and beat the fast finishing Vinegrove (A. Eastwood) by a length. Sailing Home (F. Voight) was a length and a-half away, followed by Totolomai (R. Jenkins), Steeton (W. McEwan). Time, Imin 32 Lssec. Toreador led from end to end to score a meritorious victory. He finished full of running after leading throughout. Vinegrove was a bit unlucky but Sailing Home fiad every chance. A good start was effected in the second division, but Ohai did not start very smartly. Crubenmore, Baby Bliss, Pharoah and Banner Boy were first to break the line and they raced in this order to the far turn. Around the top the field was well strung out with Crubenmore and Baby Bliss making play from Banner Boy, Corn Queen, Solmar and Leading Boy. The order was the same into the straight and a great race home saw Baby Bliss (T. Metcalf) beat Crubenmore (A. E. Didham) by a neck. Solmar (W. Cooper) was a length away followed by Leading Boy (A. Leckie) and Banner Boy (L. J. Ellis). Time, Imin 33 4-ssec.' Baby Bliss was always helping to force the pace and was all out to win. He returned his supporters over a score. T. Metcalf thus scored his first success on returning to the saddle after a lengthy absence owing to an injury. Crubenmore’s was a good effort and Solmar finished well. Banner Boy faded out in the straight.

Betting on the Riverton Cup took a wide range, but Inevitable wound up favourite having one hundred and thirty supporters more than Red Sea. Royal Saxon was two hundred and three fancies away, forty-four ahead of Speed Light. The pool totalled £2783 10/- against £3841 10/- last year. The scratchings were Pink Note, Black Duke, Habit, Glenrowan, Apache, Francolin, Poor Boy, High Gear. A great start was effected from which Charmaine, Inevitable and Royal Saxon were first to break the line. Passing the stewards stand Inevitable had taken charge from Royal Saxon, Charmaine, Red Sea, High Speed and Speed Light. Turning out of the straight Inevitable ran very wide but did not lose a great deal of ground. Charmaine led into the back from Inevitable, Royal Saxon, High Speed, Red Sea, Royal Saxon and Town Major. This was the order right to the turn. Speed Light was second last. At the far turn Charmaine was just showing out from Inevitable who was still under a good hold. High Speed, Town Major, Red Sea, Royal Saxon, Camisader and Wingatui followed in a bunch. Around the top Camisader and Wingatui travelled around the field and the pair landed into the straight ahead of Inevitable, High Speed Town Major, Red Sea, Salmo Salar, Royal Saxon and Charmaine. When straightened up Camisader and Wingatui drew away, but Inevitable stuck on and Salmo Salar put in a run. A slogging run in saw Camisader (G, Humphries) get the last stride in to beat Wingatui (C. Hughes) by a nose. Inevitable (A. Eastwood) was only half a length away, followed in a bunch by Salmo Salar (F. Ingram), Town Major (W. Hogan), Red Sea (L. J. Ellis), Charmaine (A. E. Didham), Royal Saxon (D. O’Connor), and Night Rose (W. Austin). Time 2min 14sec. It was a very fine race and aroused great interest. Camisader was not sighted until approaching the straight, but from here ho put in a great run. Wingatui followed him and the stablemates had a great tussle for the prize. There was nothing in it and tho Wingatui mentor C. Giesler deserves great credit for the manner in which both of them were turned out. Inevitable went a great race, but with a stronger horseman up, he may have won. Salmo Salar finished strongly but all of the topweights failed at the distance. The unreliable Speed Light was not in a galloping mood. She was well placed early, but drifted rapidly in the back and was last to finish. There appeared to be some rough riding in the race.

Snowfall was the public’s fancy for the Great Western Steeplechase, having ninety eight friends more than Deportment with Squatter one hundred and nineteen away. The pool totalled £1731 against £2305 10/last year. From a good start Diamond Jack, Snowfall, Maungamoe and Squatter led over the first fence. Radiac made a bad jump at the post and rails and Squatter bumped his rider off. At the gorse fence opposite the stand Taramoa led Valves, Deportment and Diamond Jack. Matu baulked, ran across the fence and stopped Snowfall while Maungamoe lost his rider. Around the top Valves went into the lead from Diamond Jack, Deportment, Taramoa and Radiac. Snowfall who had been toiling along in the rear, refused at this fence (near the main road) and was pulled up. Valves maintained his advantage right round to the water jump where he had a handy lead from Radiao who had made up a good deal of ground, then Diamond Jack, Deportment and Taramoa. Radiac joined Valves around the top, but the latter led down the back. Deportment had a life at the first of the double, but held his place. Valves jumped the post and rails ahead of Deportment and Taramoa who bumped his rider off. Deportment ran Up to Valves around the top and led over the sod wall from Valves, Radiac and Diamond Jack who nearly unseated his rider. Deportment (J. Kerr) landed safely over the last fence and came on to win by four lengths. A great set to for second place saw Valves (A. Youngman) beat Radiac (H. Anderton) by a short neck with Diamond Jack (Mr. F. Pratt) four lengths away.. These were the only ones to finish. Timo 6min, 57 2-ssec. Deportment had several lives but nevertheless won nicely. His pilot deserves great credit. Valves gave a great display of jumping, but tired badly. Radiac too was tired but stoutly challenged Valves in the run home and only narrowly missed second place. Diamond Jack gave his owner a rough ride, but got Found,

The Visitors’ Hack Handicap saw Ozone elected favourite having ten friends more than Insolvency with Jack A Dandy nineteen awav, sixty nine ahead of Ilkley. The pool totalled £1978 10/- against £2920 last year. Thornton played up prior to the start and sidled across the track and fell into a ditch. A good start was effected, Red Royal, Tea Urn and Ozone being first to break the line. Insolvency ran to the front after two furlongs and led around the turn from Ozone, Milliner, Ace of Hearts and Red Royal. Miss Redowa moved up across the top where Insolvency was making play from Ozone and Tea Urn. Insolvency led into the straight from Ozone, Miss Redowa and a bunch headed by Tea Urn, Rfed Royal, Milliner, and Ace of Hearts. At the distance Miss Redowa challenged, and Red Royal put in his claim. Miss Redowa (C. Pope) forged to the front opposite the main stand and won by three lengths from Red Royal (G. Humphries) who beat the fast finishing Bachelor’s Idol (C. Hughes) by half a length. Cetchela (T. Metcalf) was next, followed closely by Milliner (F. Ingram), Insolvency (G. Barclay) and Tea Urn (N, J. Dwyer). Time Imin 19sec. Miss Redowa has hitherto been taken to the front in her races and she petered out at the finish. On this occasion Pope kept her in behind and coming with a well sustained run was going away at the finish. Red Royal finished strongly but Bachelor’s Idol was going much faster. More handily placed early she must have been troublesome. Ozone failed to run on and Insolvency also stopped. She was badly galloped on during the race. Thornton’s fall apparently affected her for, usually a good beginner she was slow to move and actually finished last. It was nothing like her form.

There was keen speculation in the Pourakino Handicap, the Trentham trained Habit winding up favourite with fourteen more friends than Some Toff. Battle Maid was one hundred and two tokens away, sixteen ahead of Assemble. The total was £2258 10/- against £2949 last year. From a walk up start Habit was last away, but the field was practically in line. Battle Maid and Some Toff were first to get clear from Assemble and Apache. Battle Maid led into the back from Apache, Membo and Some Toff and they raced down the back in this order with Assemble last. Some Toff was getting a good run on the rails. Around the top Battle Maid was still making play followed by Membo, Habit and Some Toff and this was the order into the straight with Apache last. Battle Maid was being ridden at the distance and Membo then Assemble put in their claims while Apache commenced a long run. A slogging finish saw Assemble (N. J. Dwyer) beat Membo (A. Eastwood) by a length and a half. Apache (F. J. McKay) travelling very fast wide out was only a neck away, followed by Battle Maid (W. Austin), Habit (S. Wilson) and Some Toff (F. Voight). Time Imin 46sec. Assemble was judiciously handled and deserved her win. Membo made a great effort and should not be long in returning to the winning list. He has come to hand more quickly than was thought. Apache put in some great work over the final three furlongs and should be dangerous in the near future. Battle Maid had every chance but failed over the final furlong. This was not Unexpected for she made all the running. Habit and Some Toff were great disappointments, but can be expected to improve. ACCEPTANCES FOR TO-DAY. The following are the acceptances for the second day of the Riverton Racing Club’s meeting:— HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, £125. One and a-quarter miles.

AUSTRALIAN JOCKEY CLUB. RACING AT RANDWICK. AMMON RA WINS SIRES’ PRODUCE STAKES. AN EASY SUCCESS. DONCASTER TO SIR CHRYSTOPHER. (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, April 5. The Autumn meeting of the Australian Jockey Club opened at Randwick on Saturday in fine and cool weather. The attendance was 41,000. The track was in excellent condition. The Dimmer, a pronounced Cup fancy, enhanced his prospects in that event by annexing in decided fashion the Autumn Stakes. Chide, from who great deeds were expected, was unable to gain a place. New Zealand’s champion two-year-old Ammon Ra won the richly endowed Sires’ Produce Stakes in effortless fashion.

The Doncaster was productive of a brilliant finishing effort on the part of the winner, Sir Chrystopher, who was badly placed in the early stages of the race and was fifth last on entering the straight, but under vigorous riding by the jockey, J. Munro, he unwound a dashing run which carried him to victory by half a length. Owing to the suspension of W. Duncan, the Victorian champion lightweight jockey, for a month for interference in the Sires’ Produce Stakes, a new rider will be required for The Dimmer in the Sydney Cup on Monday. E. Bartie will probably receive the mount as the latter’s mount, Tregiila, is not likely to start in the Cup. The sporting writer “Cardigan,” in the Sunday Guardian, says that Ammon Ra, winner of the Sires’ Produce Stakes, proved himself quite as good as his New Zealand admirers claimed, finishing very determinedly. “There is little doubt he will make a name for himself as-a three-year-old. (Special to the Times.) Christchurch, April 4. The Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting opened in glorious weather. There was a really good attendance, but the track was very heavy when the racing started. It however was in good order, but rather slow before half the programme was gone. Standby was sent out a solid favourite for the Preliminary Handicap, but he refused to go away properly and was soon in a hopeless position. All Peters was the only starter to go solidly from end to end and so deserved his win. Had Standby gone away a little more smartly he would have won. As it was he only failed to get the lead by a length. When going he is a stylish and effortless trotter. The Fendalton Handicap was the best of good things for Dilnon. He took charge before going three furlongs from Kate Logan and Royal Comrade and from there on was always a winner. He won going away and considering the state of the track his time was very fast. Royal Comrade was beaten on his merits. He was being hard ridden two furlongs from home and was a weary horse at the finish when first Cranleigh and then Nelson d’Oro cut him out. The favourite, Cranleigh, began smartly and paced well. He was running fifth at the end of a quarter of a mile and was nearer to Dilnon then than he was at the finish. On the day Dilnon outclassed the opposition. The Eastern Handicap was a funny race. The field ran in two strings. One of these, headed by Glenrossie and Great Logan stuck to the rails where the going was heavy. The other, headed by Vesuvius, travelled along the top of the bank where ■ the going was good, if somewhat dead. Those on top of the bend had the race to themselves over the last half mile, most of those in the mud having been pulled up, the two first to pull up being Donald’s bracket, Dundas Boy and Lindbergh. The only one of those to finish who had chosen to race on the rails was Pluto, who finished a very bad fourth. Taken altogether it was a poor race, as with half a mile to go Free Advice, Vesuvius and The Abbey were the only runners that had a chance. Considering the reputation he brought from Southland, Satin King was not as heavily supported as he should have been. The next time he starts he will carry a much bigger percentage of the pool than he did to-day. Two of the limit lot in Hostess and Proud Dillon failed to go away properly, but Satin King shot to the front with a good lead, with Colonial Boy, Jolly Pet and Sunny Bob following in each other’s wake. The Southlander paddied along very smoothly, having an easy action, and kept staring about as if h« was taking in his surroundings. At the end of 12 furlongs Hostess and several others made a forward move, but they could not make any impression upon the leader. It appeared as if a few of the runners pulled out when they found they could not get to Satin King.

Stanley T. won the Autumn Handicap very easily from Home Voyage with Master Audo next, the three being well clear of Olive Nelson who. after losing a lot of ground at the start, put in a great last mile. Stanley T. won so very easily that he must be classed as one of our speediest trotters. It is hard to imagine how he came to be beaten into second place by All Peters in the first race. Of those that finished behind Stanley T., Olive Nelson looks to have the best prospects of beating him on the second day. Red Shadow, who was a hot favourite for the Belfast Handicap, had the misfortune to draw the inside position at the barrier. This meant that he was down in the mud. When those wide out got away more smartly than he did, the colt left his feet and was never seen afterwards. Milo Minto made a bold bid to win after trailing Mercury for six furlongs, but Sir Author put in a great run on the outer and fairly outclassed him. The winner is somewhat infirm and the going suited him to a nicety. Cranleigh ran a good race for a mile then petered out, but Nee Oro, after beginning slowly, put in a great final effort over the last half mile. Eugene do Oro is another that put in a bid, but she had to try and go through the mud and it stopped her very quickly. Rawhitiroa won the Wilkin Handicap just as easily as all the other races had been won. Soon in a good position, he challenged the leaders, Teremoa and Our George, three furlongs from home and headed them off without any trouble. It was a one horse race. Teremoa might have finished in the money had he been driven with more patience and had not hung out badly. Travis Axworthy got a good run in the Flying and Harold Logan got a bad one. One horse was on good going all the way and the other in the lead. On equally good ground, Harold Logan would have won.

HISTORIC AND SHATTER GO WELL. (Special to the Times.) Christchurch, April 4. At Riccarton the outside of the course proper was open for fast work. Rain overnight left it in good order. Patches of heavy fog prevented many gallops being timed. Muff was allowed to gallop on the No. 6 track and she ran six furlongs in Imin 17 3-ssec. She is getting over her attack of kidney trouble. Spoon, with a featherweight up, galloped nine furlongs. The last mile took Imin 45 2-ssec and the last half 54sec. Taragona galloped a mile in Imin 48 2-5 sec and Aberfeldy, with a big weight up, took four seconds longer to cover the same ground. . . Praise, Jaloux and-Azalia cantered once round. All three are in fairly good order. Jaloux is the best of them.' Meprisant was not all out to run a mile in Imin 46 2-ssec. The first half-mile was covered in 531-ssec and he was going strongly at the finish. He has been a disappointment all the season, but he may make amends 'as he is more forward now. Silver Paper was allowed to stride along at a solid pace. He was lame in front as he walked back to the scraping sheds. Cricket Bat and Zeebrugge. dashed over half a mile up the back in 51sec. Gasrange beat Nightflier over six furlongs in Imin 24sec. The best gallop of the morning was put up by Historic (A. Messervy) and Shatter (C. Eastwood). There would be about a stone between them. They kept together all the way and completed the journey in Imin 31 3-ssec. Shatter was doing his best, but Historic could have gone away front him. Historic has never looked better in any of his previous visits to Riccarton. He pulled up well and so did Shatter. Autopay and Idolize rattled over half a mile up the back, but were not timed. Huntley and Synonym schooled together over three flights of hurdles, jumping well. Synonym went on over the fourth alone and bungled it badly, but did not fall. Semper Paratus and Full Feather finished together and well clear of Ball Dress at the end of a mile done in Imin 46 l-ssec. Semper Paratus went particularly well. All three carried small boys. Limerick (C. Eastwood) and Charmeuse (A. Messervey) were sent seven furlongs. At the end of three furlongs Charmeuse was out by herself, but Limerick, hard ridden all down .the straight, got up and beat her by a length. He should have done so as he was in receipt of about 141bs. The first three furlongs, took 38 l-ssec and the seven Imin 32 l-ssec. Messervey never moved on Charmeuse, but she is a mare that is finished when she is done pulling. Great Star, with over 9 stone up, left Jive furlongs behind in Imin 4sec. The first furlong 'was done in 13sec. It was a smart performance as he finished strongly and pulled up well. Rapina beat Sharpthorn over seven furlongs in Imin 34sec.
