WOMEN’S DIVISION
THORNBURY BRANCH. 1 The first annual meeting of the Thornbury branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held on Tuesday afternoon, 22 members being present. The report showed that since the branch’s inception eight months ago six meetings had been held and on an average were well attended. Ten members were enrolled at the first meeting and now the membership stood at 37. Interesting demonstrations were given during the year by Mrs Hall (first aid) , Miss McNaughton (dressmaking) and Mrs Randle (preserving fruit, vegetables etc.). A sale of plants, a euchre tournament and a dance were held as a means of raising funds. Members canvassed the district for the Cancer Campaign and Earthquake Relief Fund and were successful in collecting £36 19/- and £65 8/respectively. Up to the present time only one box had been procured from the Home Science Extension Bureau. A statement of receipts and expenditure showed a satisfactory credit balance. After the adoption of the report and balance sheet, the election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs J. Fallow; vice-presidents, Mrs Hall (re-elected) and Mrs Hillis; secretary and treasurer, Miss M. Fallow (re-elected) ; committee, president, vice-presidents, secretary, Mesdames T. H. Anderson, D. M. Anderson, J. Buchanan, A. M. Fallow and J. McLean; advisory members, bush nurse and Housekeeper scheme, Mesdames Hall and Hillis; delegates to Southland executive, Mesdames Hall and Hillis. It was decided ot send no delegate to the Dominion conference. Mrs A. M. Fallow proposed a vote of thanks to the retiring president for the able manner in which she conducted the meetings during her term of office.
