NEW COMMANDER

SHANGHAI VOLUNTEER CORPS. (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) (Rec. 12.50 a.m.) Shanghai, March 10. Lieutenant-Colonel Thoms, of the New Zealand Staff Corps, arrived to-day to take over the command of the Shanghai Volunteer Corps in place of Brigadier Orpen Palmer, who has retired. The new commandant controls the most extraordinaryvolunteer force in the world. Consisting of British, Russian, American and Chinese companies, it is supported by the Municipal Council to the extent of £40,000 per annum. This is the first occasion on which the command has been given to a colonial officer.
