The local horseman L. J. Ellis will be riding at the Banks Peninsula meeting today.

Q, S. Donald has trained 28 light harness winners this season. He is an easv first on the list.

Weights for the first day of the Riverton Racing Club’s meeting are due on the 18th.

Hector Gray has ridden 68 winners this season. L. J. Ellis is third on the list with 30 successes.

When he learns to leave the mark correctly Sunny Gold will win races for J. Dynes.

It is stated that the Otago horseman Ben Brodie intends to leave shortly for Australia.

The Australian Cup, the longest handicap event in Australia, will be decided at Flemington to-day.

Mr J. M. Samson intends to send Lord Argosy north to contest tho North Island Challenge Stakes.

Master Jack paced a good race on Thursday, and should not be long in being returned a winner.

Mount Boa’s next appearance will probably be made at Trentham, with the Riccarton Easter meeting to follow.

Palermo was not entered for the Riverton meeting, but figures among the entries for the Great Easter Handicap.

H. Gray has an excellent Chance of riding 100 winners for this season, a feat not so far accomplished in New Zealand.

Te Awhina has again shown signs of leg troubles, and R. Ellis has deemed it advisable to give the Paper Money mare another spell.

R. Reed rode the winner of the maiden race at Wanganui, and followed it up by taking both races of this class at Woodville.

Guy Bingen was very unlucky in the ; Au Revoir Handicap on Thursday, and he should not be long in being returned a winner.

Windshield, the dam of Mr H. A. Knight’s promising gelding Shatter, is reported to be safely in foal to British Empire.

Jolly Wave is a pacer with a bright future. By Waverley-Pleasant Drive, he is a half-brother to those good horses Dalmeny and Dalnahine.

The class of straight-out trotter seen at the local meeting was very poor, and there is a great opportunity for a solid performer to win good money down this way.

E. Scoullar has Parysia in good order at

present and galloping freely in her work. - The Tractor—Moulin Rouge filly will make a trip to Trentham next week.

F. D. Jones was an absentee from the track at Riccarton on Thursday morning. He is laid aside with influenza, but expects to be about again in a day or two.

The date for declaration of weights for the Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps has been altered by the Canterbury Jockey Club- from March 17 to March 18.

The English Grand National is to be run at Aintree on March 27. It costs £lOO to start a horse, the big fee being charged with the idea of reducing the field to safer proportions.

Gold Tinge, who won the Breeders’ Plate at Randwick, but was a disappointment on returning to New Zealand, has failed to survive a preparation, and may not be trained again. '

The Wellington owner, Mr C. Boyle, last week disposed of the Australian-bred Saltpot to a patron of E. JPenman’s stable. The price was 500 and Saltpot will continue to be trained by Penman.

Great Star has been causing his ownertrainer some anxiety of late, and he has not done any fast work during the past week. His proposed trip to Trentham is therefore not likely to be undertaken.

The Canterbury District Committee has recommended the well-known trotting trainer, C. S.' Donald for a provisional trainer’s license, and M. J. Wadley for an apprentice jockey’s license.

Nelson’s Victory carried big money in each of his starts at the local fixture, but on each occasion fired away his chance at the start. His great speed will be of little use to , him until he niends his ways.

June Nelson scored an easy victory in the mile saddle event on the first day of the local trotting meeting, but when asked to go a mile and a half on the second day she failed badly. A mile is plenty far enough for her at present.

Desto was well backed on the first day of the local trotting meeting, but carried only 90 tickets on the second. The Four Chimes ■mare sustained an injury to one of her legs just prior to the meeting and was unable to do herself justice.

Mr J. R. McKenzie’s imported horse Roydea, by Ellangowan, has rejoined T. H. Gillett’s team. During his retirement he did a light stud season, and it is hoped ho is now quite sound to stand a preparation for racing.

M.. Holmes rode Ellegro in both of his races at the local trotting meeting and, in his hands, the son of Cathedral Chimes left the mark in great style. Hitherto he could be relied on to lose a good deal of ground at the start. With a repetition of this form Ellegro will win more races.

The South Otago Trotting Club has extended the time of closing for the nominations for its annual meeting-to Monday at 8 p.m. It is hinted that there is a possibility of the club obtaining a totalisator permit for the meeting, but no official advice is yet to hand! : ? ’

Mr Kervin, the owner of the trotter Paddy McKinney,. has a large milk run in Melbourne, and in the off season the brilliant trotter takes his place in the milk float. 'Tn fact, you would be surprised to knqw how useful Paddy McKinney is at any sort of work,” said Mr Kervin.

The steeplechaser, Wiltshire, winner of two Grand Nationals, is now among the regular workers under R. Syme’s charge at Te Rapa. He .is reported to be making rapid improvement in appearance, though it will be some time yet befbre he is fully equipped physically for another jumping campaign.

Undoubtedly the star performer at the local trotting meeting was the Christchurch trained Mister Pointer. The son of Logan Pionter —Jessie Fraser scored in effortless style in both of his races and he should soon.be found holding his own in much better fields than, he met here. He has now scored in his last five starts.

The prominent New South Wales breeder “Mr S. A. Rawdon” has at his stud a mare called Tampa Bay, by Tamar-— Bayamo, by Bayardo—Conciliation. It is interesting to record that Tampa Bay’s granddam is also the granddam of the Kennington stallion British Empire. Tampa- Bay is a half sister to Thundersquall, a good winner in England, last season.

Supremacy has re-entered the list of the track workers at Te Awamutu during the past few weeks, and has been making quite satisfactory progress. Supremacy gave indications, when racing in the Spring that he was still a force to be reckoned with, and his return to active racing again will be followed with interest. He still remains in the field for the North Island Challenge Stakes, but it is doubtful if he will be on hand.

There is a possibility of New Zealand jockeys heading the riding lists in both Melbourne and Sydney this season. In Sydney Maurice McCarten, who has been prominent for several years past, is close to the head of the list. In Melbourne Ashley Reed now heads the list of winning riders. His totals comprise 26 wins, 14 seconds, and llj'thirds. W. Duncan is second with 241 wins, 16 seconds, and 16 thirds.

Night March created a mild sensation at Riccarton on Thursday morning, says the Star. He dropped his rider when taken out to work and went off on the sand track by himself. Fortunately, he was never going faster than a canter and later he reverted to a trot, eventually pulling up in the straight, where he stood quietly while his attendant walked up and caught him. He was not worked again, but he is in good health for a gallop at Motukarara on Saturday, during the progress of the Banks Peninsula Racing Club’s meeting.

It is difficult to understand why M. Holmes on Wehr Bingen left the rails in the straight at the’finish of the Southland Handicap. G. McKendry on Belinda was following' Wehr Bingen and it appeared that if he did not come up on the outside of Wehr Bingen he had no chance of catch’ing him. When Holmes left the rails, however, McKendry shot Belinda through and she beat Wehr Bingen by a short half length. Had she had to come around W'ehr Bingen her task would have been much more difficult.*

The success of Dolomite at Blenheim on Saturday, on the last occasion he was to be saddled up by Trentham trainer H. B. Lorigan, may turn the luck for the Trentham trainer’s stable. With a good team, as promising as any in the Dominion at the beginning of the season, writes “Rangatira,” Lorigan had not had a single win, either in Australia or New Zealand, during the term, until Dolomite closed the unenviable sequence on Saturday. The occasion was certainly a propitious one for the future of Concentrate, Oratorian, Gesture and the several other members of the team.

Excellent nominations have been received for the Riverton Racing Club’s annual meeting, and unless there is a big weeding out at acceptance time, some of the fields are going to be a trifle unwieldy. The club, however, must feel greatly gratified at the response made by owners. There are 31 in the Riverton Gold Cup, including the best handicap performers in Otago and Southland, two from South Canterbury and Habit from E. J. Murtagh’s Trentham stable. Arikinui is another North Islander entered in the sprint events. Fourteen are nominated for the Great Western Steeplechase and 35 for the Southern Champion Hack Handicap. GORE RACING CLUB. MEETING OF COMMITTEE. A meeting of the committee of the Gore Racing Club was held on Thursday evening, when Mr G. W. Whittingham was in the chair. and the following members attended: Messrs I. T. Martin, A. T. Pettigrew, J. B. Nicol and J. E. Rogers. It was decided to nominate Messrs G. W. Whittingham, E. J. Traynor and W. Swale as delegates to the Distric Committee. The secretary, Mr F. Young, was nominated as district representative to the New Zealand Racing Conference. An application from the Gore Motor Cycle Club for the use of the course to hold a meeting early this month was granted. Satisfactory reports from the stipendiary steward and racecourse inspector present at the recent meetings were received. A rough balance-sheet of the summer meeting showing a substantial loss over the fixture was presented. CROMWELL JOCKEY CLUB. FIRST DAY RESULTS. - MARTIS WINS CROMWELL HANDICAP. BOWLS.

THE MAYOR’S PAIRS.

WIN FOR INVERCARGILL.

Perfect weather prevailed for the final of the Mayor’s Pairs competition which was decided on the Southland green last evening before a fair number of spectators. The green was in excellent order and although in both) matches Invercargill were in the ascendant, the contests were full of interest. In the match between Robertson and Stevenson (Invercargill) and Crawford and Kissell (Te Rangi) the former pair early established a lead and finished up winners, by 29 points to 17. Hay and Hunter ‘(lnvercargill) also proved a stronger pair than T. Pryde -and T. R. Pryde, the Invercargill pair winning by 22 points to 14. At the conclusion of play the president of-the Southland Bowling Centre, Mr T. Meredith, briefly introduced his Worship the Mayor (Mr. J. D. Campbell) and referred to the enjoyment bowlers derived from the competition. , His Worship, in congratulating tho winners, said that he had while watching the play been greatly impressed with the high recreational value of tho game of. bowls. The contestants excluded everything else from their minds during play and devoted all their energy and brain-power to the game. He had also been most favourably impressed, with the fine sporting spirit displayed by winners and losers alike. Mr Hunter congratulated the losers on the good games they put up and on their sportsmanship. Mr T. Pryde replied on behalf of the losers and added the congratulations of his club. The scores were as follows:—
