Mr T. A. Wallace arrived from Christchurch by last night’s express. Miss R. Douglas, commercial mistress.at the Gore High School, has been advised that she has been successful in winning her teacher’s diploma at the recent examination conducted by Pitman’s Teachers’ Examinations Board, Melbourne. The Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle, Minister of Internal Affairs, arrived in Invercargill from Wellington by last evening’s expregs and later motored out to Winton. Mr Perrelle, who will be spending some days in the south, will be in Invercargill today.

A Sydney Press Association message states that the Rev. John Weir Burton has been elected president of the Methodist Conference of New South Wales. He spent his early years in New Zealand, where ho was educated and entered the ministry. He served at Thames and Malvern and was then for some years on the Fiji Mission, afterwards coming to Australia. Mr T. Pettit, of Tasmania, ex-champion axeman of the world, who was an invaluable help to the Southland representative team visiting the recent Tasmanian axemen’s championship meeting, arrived in Invercargill yesterday. During the weekend he will visit Tuatapere tor the express purpose of renewing, acquaintance with several of the axemen residing in that district.

Captain J. E. Dawson, who has been Harbourmaster at Wellington for nearly 16 years, has resigned, states a Press Association message. Captain Dawson has been granted special leave of absence on full pay for six months, the resignation to taka effect from August 31. Captain J. Spence, Deputy-Harbourmaster, has been appointed Acting-Harbourmaster, and Captain P. S. Peterson Acting-Deputy-Harbourmaster, both appointments to date from March 1. The question of permanent appointments will come up for decision at the expiration of six months from that date.
