SPORTING

GORE RACING CLUB. SUMMER MEETING CONCLUDES. RED SEA CHIEF WINNER. AL JOLSON SUCCESSFUL. HEAVY MACHINE DROP. The Gore Racing Club’s Summer meeting concluded yesterday in perfect weather. Th© track was in good order and the sport throughout the day was very keen, close finishes being the order of the day. Mr A. D. Mclvor again did good work at the barrier and at the other end Mr B. Ireland had no hesitation in announcing his decisions with celerity. , t • The attendance was again only fair and was well below last year. The sum of £l5O 16/- was taken at the gates, representing a drop of £42 16/- on last. year. The total for the two days was £37 a 17/6 against £554 1/- last year. The totahsator returns showed a total of £6,446 10/against £10,591 last year. The total for the two days was £14,408 against £24,94a last year, a decrease of £10,537. The racing was not free from incident and the Judicial Committee sat three times during the day. As the result of an inquiry held after the Mataura High-Weight, E. Mackie, rider of Tunamoe, was advised to be more careful in future. It is understood that the inquiry concerned the alleged crossing of Solmuri by Tunamoe just at the turn for home. From the stand there did not appear to be anything wrong, for at this stage Solmuri was beaten and losing ground while Tunamoe was going on strongly. After the Autumn Handicap, an inquiry was held into the form shown by Red Sea in the race as compared with previous efforts, but the Judicial Committee accepted the explanations of the connections of the mare and no action was taken. At the conclusion of the Borough Handicap an inquiry was held into alleged interference bv Francolin with Battle Maid and R. Jenkins, rider of the former, was advised to be more careful in future. The results were as follows: — MATAURA HIGH-WEIGHT AND HACK RACE, £120; second horse £2O; third £lO. Eight and a-half furlongs. 6 E. J. Passing the stand, Trixie Belle was still in the lead from Chiming Wave, War Paint, Meditate, Free Chimes and Sadie Bingen. Turning into the back there was no change, but Erin’s Fair was making up distance. Down the back, Meditate moved into second place ahead of Free Chimes, Sadie Bingen and Honest Dillon and at the far turn Trixie Belle was still in the van leading Chiming Wave, Honest Dillon, Free Chimes Meditate and . Sadie Bingen. Meditate moved up round the top and into the straight Trixie Belle was still in the lead from Meditate, who broke, Honest Dillon, Ellegro and Probationer. Trixie Belle held her own in the run home and beat Honest Dillon by half a length. Probationer was three-quarters of a length away followed by Meditate, Sadie Bingen and Erin’s Fair. COMMENT ON THE RACING KEEN SPORT. RED SEA WINS NICELY. THREE INQUIRIES HELD. The Smuggler was favourite for the opening event, the Mataura 'High-Weight, having sixty-five friends more than Night Rose with Shipshape seventy-four tokens away. The pool totalled £386 against £621 last year. The field got away to a good line, Solmuri and Tunamoe being first to become prominent from Crossbow and Shipshape. Solmuri led into the back from Shipshape and The Smuggler, Crossbow being next. Tunamoe ran up to Solmuri in the back and the pair were clear at the far turn from Shipshape and The Smuggler. Night Rose and Good Gift who had been well back improved their positions around the top and into the straight Tunamoe led Solmuri and Shipshape. Solmuri compounded and Good Gift got an opening on the rails. Night Rose was taken to the outside. Shipshape had charge at the distance from Tunamoe, but Good Gift (11. Anderton) vigorously ridden came strongly and beat Tunamoe (E. Mackie) by three quarters of a length. Night Rose (N. Trillo) was a bare half length away, then coming The Smuggler (A. S. Ellis), Shipshape (D. O’Connor) and Apache (G. Dempster). Time lmin. 50 4-ssec. Good Gift put in a great run over the final three furlongs and aided by a run on the rails scored nicely. Tunamoe again went a fine race. Night Rose was well back early but finished strongly from the home turn. The Smuggler did his work in patches and showed little dash at the finish. Solmuri made most of the pace but stopped badly. Shipshape dropped out at the distance.

A keen duel for favouritism in the Hokonui Hack Handicap saw the bracketed Steeton and Thornton elected to the honour, having eighteen friends more than Memories' Francolin was thirty tokens away. The pool read at £795 against £1202 10/- last year. Steeton and Francolin were slow to move and Memories and Colonel Quex were first to break the line from Remindful and Insolvency. Thornton moved up quickly and joined Colonel Quex at the five furlong post, Crubenmore being next. Th<gnton went on clear and led Remindful, Crubenmore, Francolin and Steeton around the top. Thornton was first to turn for home from Remindful, Crubenmore, Steeton and Memories. Thornton looked a winner at the distance, but first Crubenmore, then Memories put in their claims. A great finish saw Memories (A. Eastwood) beat Crubenmore (N. J. Dwyer) by a head, Thornton (L. J. Ellis) being a neck away, two lengths clear of Steeton (W. McEwan). The next to arrive were Colonel Quex and Remindful. Time, lmin. 28 3-ssec. Memories was patiently handled and finished with a brilliant run to win narrowly. Crubenmore went a fine race and looked the winner a few yards from the post. Considering it was her first attempt over the distance, Thornton's was an impressive effort. She made most of the running and was only headed over the final few strides. Steeton began slowly but went a good race afterwards. Francolin missed the jump out and was never dangerous.

There was no hesitation about making Royal Saxon favourite for the Autumn Handicap and he carried one hundred and seventy tickets more than Some Toff. Red Racer was twenty-six friends away, nine ahead of Night Maid. The pool amounted to £668 against £1419 10/- last year. From a good start Some Toff, Royal Saxon and Impertinence were first to break the line and this was the order past the stand with Red Sea and Red Racer next. Royal Saxon and Some Toff went on in the lead and down the back they were one and a half lengths clear from Red Racer Red Sea and Impertinence, Night Maid being well back last. Royal Saxon went on and he was first to turn for home from Red Sea, Red Racer, Some Toff and Camisader, Impertinence next. Red Sea (L. J. Ellis) challenged and got to Royal Saxon (D. O’Connor) opposite the main stand and under punishment beat him by three quarters of a length. Impertinence (N. J. Dwyer) put in a good run from the bottom of the straight and was only a length away third. Shortly (W. McEwan) was a good fourth, followed by Camisader (J. Dooley) and Red Racer (R. Coveney). Time, lmin. 55sec.

Red Sea was ridden a waiting race and finished too strongly for Royal Saxon. Under his big burden Royal Saxon put up a bold bid for victory and his was a fine performance. Impertinence ran on better than usual but Red Racer’s finishing effort was disappointing. Some Toff had had enough two furlongs from home.

The imported Christchurch trained Llewellyn was elected favourite for the Progressive Trot in which many horses were fancied. Nelbar was one hundred and-eighty odd friends away as second fancy, eleven ahead of Sandown. The total was £922 10/against £1548 10/- last year All left well and Cheap Money, Nelbar, Celeste and Erin’s Chance led out. Passing the stand Cheap Money led from Nelbar, Sandown, Celeste and Jolly Wave with Erin’s Star and Gold Tinge. Going over the crossing threw the latter out of her stride. The field was well strung out going down the back but they presented a fine sight. Sunbloom paced fast and at the far turn it was a fine race, the order being Cheap Money, Sandown, Sunbloom, Jolly Wave. Cheap Money retired Coming to the straight and Sandown just showed out from Sunbloom, Jolly Wave, Celeste, Nelbar and Gold Tinge. Llewellyn was next. Turning into the straight he was behind five horses spread across the track. There was no opening out where he was and he could not get. through. Bay Admiral followed the bunch into the straight on the rails and he got through a gap. It was a great race at the distance but Nelbar (J. Walsh) then drew out, closely pursued by Sunbloom (P. McKay) and Bay Admiral (O. Reed). Nelbar held on and beat the faster finishing Bay Admiral by half a length. Sunbloom was another half length away and then in a bunch came Jolly Wave (E. Mitchell), Llewellvn (M. Holmes), Celeste (D. Kerr) and Erin’s Star (A. Rattray). Times, 3min. 47 2-ssec., 3min. 44 3-ssec., 3min. 48sec. Nelbar was driven a fine race by J. Walsh but only just won. More handily placed over the'middle stages Bay Admiral would have been much harder to beat. Coming through the big field was a great handicap. Llewellyn went away very fast but when looking dangerous entering the straight could not get through. Cheap Money dropped out three furlongs from home.

For the Novice Race, Toreador was made favourite, having one hundred and sixty supporters m'ore than Bridget who was onticket ahead of Musent Miss. The pool totalled £594 against £ll5O 10/- last year. Bridget was first to break the line followed by Toreador and Musent Miss, Spanish Maid being last away. Four furlongs from home Bridget, Toreador and Musent Miss were in line clear of Miss Tembaron and Rombeau. Bidget led around the top from Rombeau but Toreador was first into the straight from Rombeau and Bridget. Toreador kept clear but was being stoutly challenged. Spanish Maid and Miss Tembaron came fast and a slogging finish resulted in Toreador (L. J. Ellis) beating Spanish Maid (J. Doolev) by one and a-half lengths. Miss Tembaron (A. E. Didham) was half a length away, a neck ahead of Bridget (F. J. McKay). Then came Rombeau (W. Cooper) and Musent Miss (D. O’Connor). Time, lmin. 16sec. Toreador was always first or second and responded gamely when tackled in the straight. He won nicely. Spanish Maid lost ground early but finished with a fine burst. Miss Tembaron went a good race and finished strongly. Bridget had every chance but failed to stay.

The Borough Handicap was a good betting race, Al Jolson winding up favourite over Full Fling by two hundred and six tickets. Francolin was ten fancies away. The pool read at £950 against £l6OO last year. Francolin and Full Fling delayed the start but eventually a good start was effect-

ed, Francolin and Full Fling being first to break the line from Ace of Hearts. Full Fling went on to make play from Royal Duke, Ace of Hearts and Francolin with Battle Maid next. It was a fine race round the top and Royal Duke led Full Fling, Ace of Hearts, Battle Maid and Al Jolson, all in line into the straight. Full Fiing had her head in front at the distance but Francolin on the rails and Al Jolson on the outside were doing good work. A great run in saw Al Jolson (W. McEwan) beat Francolin (R. Jenkins) by a head. Full Fling (N. J. Dwyer) was a neck away, followed by Battle Maid (L. J. Ellis), Ace of Hearts (A. Leckie). Time, lmin 14 2-ssec. Al Jolson was well back over the early stages but over the final two furlongs he put in a great run to win narrowly. By Limond —Motley, more will be heard from him. Francolin drifted over the middle stages, but came home strongly. Full Hing was responsible for the fast pace set and but for being squeezed out at the turn for home she might have won. I ayal Duke showed a good deal of speed but did not stay on.

The locally-trained Meditate was first fancy for the Telegraph Trot, having fifty odd friends more than Erin’s Fair with Probationer one hundred and fifty friends away. The pool amounted to £9lB 10/against £1315 last year. Mac’s Lady, Hugo Wilkes and Sea Wave broke up at the start and Trixie Bell led out from Chiming Wave, War Paint, Meditate. There was practically no change right round to the far turn where Honest Dillon and Probationer were handy to the leaders. Trixie Bell was always doing it well in front and she led a bunch comprising Meditate, Free Chimes, Sadie Bingen, Honest Dillon and Probationer into the straight. Once in line for home Trixie Bell (E. Todd) was challenged by several but she held them off and beat Honest Dillon (M. Holmes) by half a length. Probationer (J. R. Waite) was one length away, followed by Meditate (J. Walsh), Sadie Bingen (W. Pascoe) and Erin’s Fair. Times: 3min 34 4-ssec, 3min 31sec, 3min 35 l-ssec. Trixie Bell by Nelson Bingen—Belle Trix led throughout and put up a very impressive performance. She is distinctly promising. Honest Dillon came through the big field in fine style and hers was also an attractive effort. But for putting in a skip when approaching the straight Meditate would have been much harder to dispose of.

Red Royal was the chief selection for the President’s Hack Handicap, carrying fifteen tickets more than Segrave who was ninety-five ahead of Cough. The pool read at £1162 10/- against £1734 last year. Segrave played up at the post and eventually was last away. Milliner, Sailing Home, Red Royal and Cough were first to become prominent and this was the order into the back. Segrave made a fast run up on the outside and was in third place passing the five furlong post, Milliner and Red Royal showing the way. Red Royal and Milliner led around the top from Segrave and Cough and this was the order into the straight where Sailing Home got a run on the rails. At the distance Cough and Sailing Home drew Sway and Some Form put in a challenge. Cough (L. J. Ellis) was all out to beat Sailing Home (F. Voight) by a length and a half. Some Form (A. Eastwood) was a similar distance away, a neck ahead of Meitui (J. Dooley). The next home were Vingrovc (N. J. Dwyer; and Red Royal (B. Brodie). Time, lmin 27 4-ssec.

Cough was well handled and scored nicely at the finish. Sailing Home was aided by a run on the rails turning into the straight but could not catch Cough. Some Form put in a fine run over the final stages after being well back throughout. Segrave was not judiciously handled and after being left was rushed up to the field to be left without a kick at the finish. Red Royal failed to stay.

Kept more or less in the nature of a secret so as to keep away large crowds of morbid sightseers, a cricket match of considerable interest to members of the mercantile community was played at Queen’s Park yesterday afternoon and evening. After an enjoyable one innings game National Mortgage emerged victorious over

Dalgety’s by 101 runs to 72. Owing to the unavoidable absence of Bradman and Duleepsinhji, Dalgety’s were unable to field so strong a team as they would have liked, but nevertheless put up a good fight against a superior team, many of whom had played before all the crowned heads in the Crescent. After a free-for-all consequent upon a coin being tossed, the Scottish instinct making itself felt, Dalgety’s went in to bat and until they were worn down by the demon bowling of K. Stuckey and R. Miller, knocked up their score of 72 to which Connolly (29) and Wills (24) were the main contributors. National Mortgage then went in and compiled their 101, the scorers to reach double figures being McKenzie (37), McGrath (12) and Dawe (10 not out). Connolly and Strettell were prominent in their onslaught upon the batsmen.
