INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

BRITISH BID FOR BUSINESS. (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Ottawa, January 6. A telegram from London (Ontario) states that an impending fight by British talking picture producers to wrest a large share of the Canadian theatrical business from the Paramount Corporation was rumoured in local motion picture circles when it was learned that representatives of a British concern were negotiating for the purchase of a number of independent theatres in Canadian cities. Gaumont Ltd. was reportedly leading the attempt by British producers to regain a large share of the lost market. A message from Winnipeg states that independent theatre owners there believe that the Gaumont British Picture Corporation will seek to purchase picture houses there and in the west.
