BOATING

YACHT AND LAUNCH RACES. Two yacht l races and a launch race were conducted by the officials of the Invercargill Boating - Club on Saturday afternoon in a light south-easterly breeze which at times proved rather patchy. The first yacht race was sailed over tho club’s triangular course and attracted nine boats, including M. Pasco's new • 14-footer. Had this boat been fitted with a spinnaker in this race there is little doubt' that she would have secured a place. The following were the handicaps: Uukulele limit, Rakiura 3min, Ulva smin, Ariel 7min, Ifis and Huia lOmin, Murihiku 111., Vai and M. Pasco 13min. On the dead beat to windward to the S.E. buoy the Rakiura drew ahead, and sailing well, maintained her lead from the scratch boats. At the end of the first round Ariel was smin ssec behind Rakiura, Huia being third 50sec further back. In the second round the 14-footers gained advantage of the patchy wind, Murihiku 111. going up into second place, followed in close order by Ariel, Vai, Huia and M. Pasco. Spinnakers were set on the run home, but Rakiura held on to cross Imin 38sec ahead of Ariel, Vai being third 9sec astern with Huia and Murihiku 111. coming in together some Bsec later. The second race was sailed over tho channel course. Seven boats ■ entered this race, the following being the starting times: Ulva 3.38 p.m., Iris 3.40, Huia 3.41, Ariel 3.42, Murihiku 111., Cal and M. Pasco 3.44 p.m. The boats reached the lower buoy in a bunch, and the run up the channel commenced. At the upper buoy the following were the times as. each boat rounded: Ulva 4.25, Vai 4.25.36, Huia 4.26.17, Iris/4.26.30, Ariel 4.26.39, Murihiku 111. . 4.26.52, M. Pasco 4.27.3. The boats were all together at the lower buoy and the run home commenced. M. Pasco made use of a spinnaker on the run home and gradually improved his position. Ulva dropped away, Vai taking the lead to go ahead to cross at 4 57.22 p.m., followed by M. Paeco at 5.1.30, Murihiku HI. 5.1.47, Iris 5.2.58, Huia 5.3.18, Ariel 5.3.58. Four launches entered the launch race, the handicaps being as follows: Alert limit, Seabird and Flora smin, Thistle 7min. Flora lost 35sec at the start with engine trouble, but the others got . under way smartly. Alert held the lead all the way to win from Flora by olsec, the other boats being well back .
