, END OF THE YEAR. ■ BREAK-UP CEREMONIES. The. following reports of school break-up ceremonies have been received; — ARDLUSSA. On Thursday afternoon the break-up picnic and presentation of prizes took place on the Ardlussa School grounds. The function was presided over by the chairman, Mr John Butler. While briefly addressing the gathering of parents, friends and children, he spoke in glowing terms of the new school mistress, Miss Campbell of Anderson’s Bay, Dunedin. All the children attending the school have passed. The school looked very pretty, being decorated by the pupils with coloured streamers and flowers. After the prizes were all presented Mr John Butler asked the children to give three hearty cheers for their teacher, which were heartily given. At Browns on Thursday evening the school children gave their annual school concert to a large audience. The programme consisted of the following items: Playette, ‘lndians and Niggers,” senior children; costume items, “Chinese Umbrella,” “Dutch Doll,” “Rendezvous”; choruses, “Arcadian Lullaby”; “How would you like to be a baby girl’”; dialogue, “Guess what’s in my pocket”; Christmas sketch; operetta, “Magic Shoe-maker”; monologue and recitations. Attendance certificates for the year were won by Anthony J. Miles, Annie Clausen, Emily Miles, Hugh Quail, Marjory Robb, Catherine Moylan, Imelda Moylan, Monica, Irwin, Ruskin Robb, Rayner Robb, Stuart Robb, Joyce Cunningham and Eva Walker.

ORETI. On Thursday evening the pupils of the Oreti School gave their annual concert to a large audience in the Oreti Public Hall. The stage was beautifully decorated with coloured lights and evergreens. The programme was as follows: bong, “Arcadian Lullaby,’; song, “House that Jack built"; recitation, Jocelyn Horner; song, “Spanish Cavaliers”; song, Jock Campbell; song, “Mary and I”; dance, “Tea Table Tattle’'; song, “Cuddle Doon”; tong, “Under the Greewood Tree”; recitation, Seth Smith; duet; song, Shirley Smith; songs, “Golden Dream Boat”, “Daddy Little Blue-eyed Boy”; recitation, June Horner. The latter half of the programme was contributed to by Misses Mcßae, M. Humphrey, Isobel Lindsay, J. Horner, Messrs A. Brown, G. Lindsay and F. Tilley. TEACHERS HONOURED.

At the Oreti School concert on Thursday evening, the headmaster, Mr Thomson, and Miss McCalman were guests of honour. Both teachers are leaving the district and each was presented with a small gift from the people of Oreti. In presenting Mr Thomson with a striking ciock the chairman (Mr T. Maclean) referred to the excellent work he had done at the school. He had also. taken a prominent part in district affairs, and the speaker on beha.f of the community wished him a happy and successful future. Mr Maclean also made a reference to the excellent work of Miss McCalman who was also leaving the district and he presented her with a toilet set.

A pleasant function took place at the Winton School on Thursday afternoon last when the rector, Mr G. Griffiths, bade farewell to the teachers who have severed their connection with the school. Mr T. F. A. Y'oung, 8.A., had been appointed special relieving assistant in July last, and with the end of the year his term had expired. Three other teachers, Misses V. McKenzie, A. Gunn and W. Woodnorth, had also completed their terms with the school. Miss McKenzie, had been acting as probationary assistant and Misses Gunn and Woodnorth as probationers. The rector referred to the excellent work of the retiring teachers and wished them success in their profession. He presented each with a small gift as a token of esteem in which they were held by the remaining teachers. The recipients of the gifts suitably replied.
