MATCH AT GORE INVERCARGILL DEFEAT EASTERN MANY CLOSE GAMES The Invercargill v. Eastern District representative match,- which is played annually at Gore before Christmas, is almost invariably favoured with ideal summer weather. Saturday proved in keeping with the match days of former years. In tact so hot was it that not a few players showed signs ot distress towards the close of the afternoon. Save for two men who were unable to make the trip, the Invercargill team consisted of the pick of the players in the area and they succeeded in gaining a victory by 19 matches to 5. This decisive margin would convey the impression that the contest was one-sided, but, this was very far from being the case, many of the cityplayers who won having very few games to spare in their sets. The games total for the match was Invercargill 241, Eastern 166; and this shows how well contested the individual matches were. Speaking generally it may be said that while the Eastern men were well up to the standard of former years, the ladies were weaker. The match should prove valuable as a guide to the selectors in choosing the provincial representative team. McLeod and Townsend and Misses Blakie and Kelly must have strong claims to provincial honours after their displays on Saturday. In the men’s singles Invercargill lost only one match, but there were no runaway victories. Sumpter found McLeod a much better tactician than in 1929 and the Invercargill man got home by the narrow margin of 6—5, 6 —5. McLeod’s driving was very fine and he came up to volley effectively on many occasions. . Deaker nearly met his match in Townsend, who was brilliant for two-thirds of the match and very erratic in the remaining games. The first set went to Tonwsend 6—5. Then Deaker took six games on end. The third set saw Townsend on top for three games. Then Deaker clapped pace on to his drives and took another six games on end, but not without some stiff opposition. Lindsay played excellently all round to beat Henderson 6 —5, 6—l. The Wyndham man could not find touch with his drive. Stephens seemed to have bis match well in hand against Meldrum when he led s—l in the third set, but he slumped and Meldrum was able to save the day by taking five games on end. McKay’s good driving and good match temperament gave him victory over Chapman after a long tussle. Hamilton, by good forehand driving, defeated Maude, another man who relies on his forehand, 6—3,

The first men's double between Sumpter and Lindsay and Henderson and Townsend was good only in parts. With the exception of Lindsay the players made too many errors. McLeod’s forceful driving and Chapman’s excellent work at the net gave the Eastern pair victory in the third set over Deaker and Stephens. McKay and Hamilton went well together to beat Maude and Meldrum 6—5, 6—3.

All the ladies’ singles except the sixth one went to Invercargill. Miss Melvin made no race of it with Miss Blakie, .who is not nearly as good in singles as in doubles. Miss Melvin played many splendid winning shots. Although Miso Guest beat Miss Kelly 9 —5 she has played many better games, for she seemed careless in making many of her shots. Miss Rein is returning rapidl.v to her best form and defeated Miss Maher 9—l. No one showed better form during the day than Miss Lawrence, who won all her matches. She drove splendidly against Mi | Harvey-. Miss Wade beat Miss Brotherston 9—5, displaying an attractive though erratic backhand. Miss Metzger found Miss Graham’s placements too good, the Gore girl winning 9—4. All three ladies’ doubles went to Invercargill, the first two by big margins, the third by a single game. In this last match Misses Metzger and Wade made a good recovery. They were down B—4, but got home in the end 9—B. The Eastern ladies suffer in their doubles through not playing net. Probably the best tennis of the day was seen in the first mixed double when Townsend's fine net play and Miss Blakie’s judicious support gave them victory over Sumpter and Miss Melvin 9—4. Miss Rein was largely responsible for defeating McLeod and Miso Kelly 9—6. She got through a tremendous amount of work in this game. Lindsay and Miss Guest just got home 9—B against Chapman and Miss Harvey. Both McKay and Miss Wade and Stephens and Miss Lawrence had comfortable wins, but Hamilton and Miss Metzger had to lower their colours to Maude and Miss Graham. The visiting team was most hospitably entertained by- the Gore ladies. The scores, with Invercargill names first mentioned, are:— Men’s Singles. Sumpter beat McLeod 6—5, 6—5. Deaker beat Townsend 5—6, 6 —o, 6 —3. Lindsay beat Henderson 6—5, 6—l. Stephens lost to Meldrum 5—6, 6—3, 5—6. McKay- beat Chapman 6—2, 5 —6, 6 —2. Hamilton beat Maude 6—3, 6—4. Ladies’ Singles.
