UNEMPLOYMENT IN U.S.A.

RELIEF MEASURES PASSED. (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright) (Rec. 7.5 p.m.) Washington, December 20. Congress passed and Mr Hoover signed measures appropriating 116,000,000 dollars for immediate emergency construction work in aid of national unemployment relief and 45,000,000 dollars for drought relief. Congress finally allowed the President to allocate the funds after amendments to leave control in the hands of Congress were defeated.

Senators Walsh (Massachusetts) and La Follette assailed the measure as a “drop in a bucket,” and demanded additional appropriations to be expended for direct relief rather than through public works.
