IN TOWN AND OUT

NEWS OF THE DAY.

Church Union. During the holidays Knox Presbyterian Church' and St. Peter’s Methodist Church will unite, one morning and one evening service being held alternately in each church. * , * ft * Vandalism. Another example of vandalism at Winton occurred on Saturday evening last. A country resident living about 20 miles from Winton motored to the township and parked his car in a back street. It was a fairly late hour when the visitor completed his business, and on going to get his motor car he was astonished to see the windscreen and other parts of the vehicle smothered with paint. After some laborious work the motorist managed to scrape the largest portion of the paint off, and was able to arrive home at an early hour the next, morning. It is stated that actions of this nature have been fairly frequent of late. —Winton correspondent. Little Girl Injured. As the result of being knocked down by a motor car shortly before 1 p.m. yesterday, Elva Pearce, aged 5, who resides at 210 Liddell street, was admitted to the Southland Hospital. The accident occurred in Conon street, in the vicinity of Crinan street. The child received a fractured skull and an operation was performed. At midnight her condition was reported to be satisfactory.

Exploring Wilds Of Fiordland. A band of adventurous explorers from the Southland Power Board’s staff, consisting of Messrs G. C. Tapper I. O’Brien, and R. Ferris, accompanied by Mr R. Smith, leave to day on a tour into the wilds of Fiordland. Their objective is the almost unknown locality of the headwaters of the Hauroko Burn and the Grebe River. Their base camp has already been pitched in the vicinity of Green Lake which is some 15 miles from Lake Monowai. It is stated that some of the party have been assiduously studying the Maori language in case they meet with remnants of the “lost tribe.”
