CIVIL SERVANTS
FARMERS’ RESOLUTIONS DISCUSSED. A special combined meeting of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, the Public Service Association, the Railway Officers’ Institute, the Post and Telegraph Association, the Railway Tradesmen’s Association and the Engine-drivers’, Firemen and Cleaners’ Association was held in the Railway Library last evening to discuss the resolutions recently passed by the Invercargill branch of the Farmers’ Union in reference to reductions in Civil Servants’ salaries. There was a very representative attendance present, and members generally were indignant at the attitude taken by the farmers in suggesting that Civil Servants’ salaries should be lowered. Speakers said that Civil Servants appreciated the hard times at present being experiencel by farmers, but pointed out that in the times of good prices and big harvests the farmers overlooked the Civil Servants. After a'full discussion the following resolution was carried: “That the resolutions passed by the Invercargill branch of the Farmers’ Union with reference to the lowering of salaries of Civil Servants be forwarded to the various Civil Service executives in Wellington for any action they think fit to take.”
