An assurance to tha 3 effect was given with the announcetnen 1 by the Chamber of Commerce of an agree 4 ment signed by all the leading transpacifi 5 steamship lines and railroad companies t 1 absorb wharfage charges levied by the Har 5 bour Commission upon cargoes held at Sai 8 Francisco in transhipment for a period ex ceeding ten days. “By sharing this burden “ the carriers-, have not only placed Sai I, Francisco on a parity with Seattle, whicl has heretofore received thousands of ton of cargoes annually that might logical! have entered this port, but have reducei the handling and storage charges to ver; much less than the northern port,” th b chamber’s statement said. ‘‘This new in ducement will benefit not only the ship per of merchandise from Oriental countrie to interior points in the United States, bu r. will attract a vast amount of new busines to steamship and rail lines. Coincident witl Ihe agreement of the carriers to absorl wharfage charges, which amount is L - cents a ton for thirty days, the chambe was successful in persuading the Harbou Board to discontinue limiting the storagi period on incoming cargoes to ten days ‘ thereby giving the shipper the same advan tages in San Francisco that he has pre 3 viously enjoyed in Seattle. The ten-da; storage limit was originally imposed hen to discourage the use of wharves for ware house purposes.
