LUMSDEN NOTES
(From Our Correspondent.) A meeting of the Lumsden branch of the P.W.M.U. was held on Thursday, when the following were present: Mesdames Boyle, Smith, Williamson, Mclntosh, Small, McFetridge and Campbell. The sum of £3 10/- was voted to mission funds. The secretary reported that a parcel of clothing had been sent to the Maori Alission. An interesting letter was received from Miss D. Matthews. The mission study lesson was taken from a chapter on China and her people. A very interesting paper on friendships was read by the president. On Monday evening a bright entertainment was given by a party of University students. A large audience greeted the performers whose efforts were thoroughly appreciated. The party was comprised of eight members who provided a well balanced concert. After the concert a dance was held, the music for which was supplied by the students. The tennis match Lumsden B v.. Wendonside set down for Saturday last was postponed on account of the weather conditions. The Lumsden A team, however, travelled to Riversdale to play the Riversdale team. Conditions were not favourable, but the match was completed and the home side proved to be victorious.' The result of the match will make the competition for the Campbell Cup an interesting one, as Lumsden A and Freshford arc now equal in points for the premiership. One of the Lumsden players, Mr W. Wellman, had the misfortune to meet with an accident on the journey home from Riversdale. While negotiating a bad piece of road the windscreen of the car was broken and he received severe cuts in the face which necessitated several stitches. The driver of the car was fortunate in escaping with only a slight abrasion on the face. At the meeting of the Lumsden Town Board held on Tuesday, Mr James Campbell was elected chairman and Mr A. Heath was appointed deputy chairman. The position of chairman was held for a number of years by Mr F. Keith, who has resigned ow'ing to his removal from the district. The pupils of the Lumsden School were treated to a picnic recently by the School Committee and ex-pupils. Ideal weather prevailed and a most enjoyable afternoon was spent in competitions for the children and adults. Excellent arrangements were made by the committee with Mr J. Campbell as chairman and Mr L. Robb secretary.
Several visiting anglers arc at present in the district, but c< nditions have not been favourable owing to the changeable weather. At the time of writing the weather appears to be more settled and prospects of favourable conditions prevailing during the holidays are brighter. Miss Joan Mullan, who has been on the staff of the Lumsden School for a number of years, has received notice of her appointment to the position of sole teacher at Castlerock.
Nurse Pearce, who has been spending her annual holidays in the north, has returned to Lumsden. During her absence the Lumsden-Wakatipu Plunket district was in charge of Nurse Allen. Mrs L. Owen has returned to Lumsden after having spent a few weeks in Christchurch.
Mrs P. A. Williams, Riverton, has been spending a holiday with Mrs A. McAlister, Lumsden.
