WINTON NOTES

DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL. (From Our Correspondent.) Last year the pupils of the Winton District High School produced their first school magazine. The venture proved such a success that it has been decided to make it an annual journal. The 1930 edition is slightly larger than that of last year, and reading matter which would be a credit to any journalist is enclosed. The convener, Miss A. Mcßean, the editor, Mr H. Lilico, and the literary committee are deserving of special praise on the production of this magazine. Not only does it supply the scholars with a souvenir of their secondary schooling, but it also gives parents an insight into school work and sport. Commencing with an editorial and an article dealing with the school and the community, the magazine goes on to tell of events that have happened during the year. The form notes tell in a friendly manner of the doings of each class, while sports notes and the literary section make interesting reading. An article under the heading of valedictory gives an account of the farewell tendered to Mr J. S. Nelson, rector of the High School and headmaster of the primary department since 1925. In the lines of the magazine the following references are made to the first rector of the present W.D.H.S.: “He was one of the finest headmasters that the school has ever been associated with, and to him is due a very large amount of the credit for the present state of the school. He endeared himself to teacher and pupil alike and every , scholarhad come to respect him as an industrious master, interested in and painstaking with every individual of the school. His genial nature, generosity and industry had made him a favourite with all whom he taught and the best wishes of a host of friends go with Mrs Nelson and himself to their new home.’''
