MAWSON EXPEDITION

VISIT TO MACQUARRJE ISLAND. (United Press Assn.—By (Rec. 9.40 p.m.) Sydney, December 18. Sir Douglas Mawson reports that the weather was stormy during the expedition’s two days’ stay at MacQuarrie Island. The wireless station and huts which were abandoned in 1916, are so weather-worn that they are now useless. The penguin rookeries, which were greatly depleted some years ago when seals were also decimated, arc beginning to recover since the island was declared a sanctuary.

After two days’ study of conditions ashore the scientists re-embarked, and the Discovery headed southward through mists. A number of icebergs were stranded on a shallow bank at the south end of the island.
