There was a crowded attendance in the House of Commons during a debate on the Exporting Laws Continuance Bill, which must be passed before the rising of the House on December 19.
The President of the Board of Trade, Mr William Graham, surprised the House by moving to disagree with the House of Lords’ amendment which would continue the Dyestuffs Act for another year.
The House seethed with excitement as the division hour approached. Mr Graham's motion was carried by 244 votes to 238.. Fifteen Liberals voted with the Conservatives, and seven Labour members, including Mr Oliver Baldwin, Miss Jenny Lee and Miss Ellen Wilkinson, did not vote.
In the House of Lords on Monday a motion was passed by S 7 votes to 13 to. include the Dyestuffs Act in the schedule of the Exporting Laws Continuonce Bill for the purposes of ensuring that the Act will remain in operation for a further 12 months instead of lapsing next month in accordance with the Government’s decision. Lord Salisbury urged a continuance of the Dyestuffs Act, and said that vital research work had been done by dyemakers. Lord Parmoor said the Government desired that the measure should lapse due to the fact that it .operated to the advantage of the textile industry. The dyemakers had established their industry during the last ten years, and were now in a position to face world competition successfully.
FURTHER RESISTANCE UNLIKELY.
(Rec. 12.5 a.m.) London, December 18. The political correspondent of the Daily Telegraph learns that the House of Lords intends to insist on the amendment to the Exporting Laws Continuance Bill, and expresses the opinion that it will be difficult for the Government, in view of the significance of the division, to further resist when the Bill is returned from the House of Lords to allow the amendment to be reinstated.
