EVENING SPORTS
ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL SHOW. Despite the rain which fell, another large crowd attended to witness the entertainment at the showgrounds last evening. The steer-riding contest provided the piece de resistance on the sports programme and .worked the crowd to a high pitch of excitement. The steers were in splendid condition and kept the majority of the riders "very busy. Nevertheless some excellent riding was witnessed and competition for the prize money was very keen. In addition, Mr J. MoArthur gave an exhibition of buckjumping and once again held the crowd with his daring horsemanship. Three pony trots, relay races and a gymnastic display by the pupils of the Boys’ High School comprised the remainder of the programme, all of the events greatly delighting the spectators. Music was provided by the Scottish Pipe Band (under Pipe-Major D. Robinson) and the Regimental Band (under Mr R. L. Pettitt). Following are the results: Pony Trot (13 hands and under) : Olive Potts 1, Marjory Mcßandle 2. Fourteen starters. Pony Trot (14 hands and under): Len Jones 1, M. Deegan 2, F. Thomson 3. This race provided an exciting finish, Jones winning by a nose. Eleven starters. Consolation Trot: M. Deegan 1, *F. Thomson 2, Len Jones 3. Medley Relay Race: S.B.H.S. A team 1, S.B.H.S. B team 2. House Medley Relay: Waiau House 1, Oreti House 2. Steer Riding: A. Mills 1, J. A. Headley and J. S. Morrison (equal) 2. Ten competitors.
