THE SOUTHERN CROSS
RETURN AFTER CRUISE. CONDITIONS IN ISLANDS. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, December 10. The Melanesian mission steamer Southern Cross returned to Auckland to-day after a three months’ cruise to the Solomon and New Hebrides Islands. About 500 children are believed to have died as the result of a serious epidemic of whooping cough in the Solomon Group, which broke out before the arrival of the Southern Cross and which was abating when the vessel left the group. There, has been an. exceptionally dry spring in the Solomon and New Hebrides groups, where the rainfall is normally very heavy. The dry spell had not broken when the Southern Cross left Villa and it was feared that there would be a shortage of food for the natives.
