STEWART ISLAND
(From Our Correspondent.! The opening of the Stewart Island Y aeht Club 'took place, on Thursday afternoon. The weather was not all that could be desired for such an occasion, but nevertheless a very happy and enjoyable afternoon was spent. A very exciting race took place between the Ilona, in charge of Victor Bragg, and the Murihiku 11, commanded by Herb Hansen, the former crossing the finishing line a few seconds ahead of the Murihiku. Through the kindness of the School Committee the children were given the afternoon off so that they might attend the opening function of the Yacht Club. The schoolboys, like their seniors, are Very keeu on this kind of sport and the water has a great attraction for them. The Yacht Committee arranged three special races for the boys, the first being single sculls. The winners were Stewart Robertson and Colin Topi. The second race was double sculls and the winner was Stewart Robertson, followed by Lewis Dawson. The third race was for model yachts in which Walter Harrison, Martin Bragg and Russell Smith made an excellent showing. Other races had to be held over owing to the boisterous winds. The children were treated to a boat trip by Mr 11. Pollock and Mr T. Bragg was very popular when he distributed a large quantity of lollies among the young people. In the evening, a dance was held in the public hall, being organized by the council. There was a jovial gathering of about 40. Music was supplied by Mrs George Bragg and Mr T. Ryan. Mr P. Moore Carter carried out the duties of M.C.
