Mr W. F. Edmond, of Dunedin, is visiting Invercargill and is a guest at the Grand Hotel.

Mr F. Wallis, snr., who has been on a visit to Christchurch and Timaru, returned to Gore on Saturday.

Mr J. Farrell, representing Messrs J. C. Williamson (New Zealand), Limited, arrived iu Invercargill by the express yesterday.

The Hon. G. J. Anderson arrived at Gore from Christchurch on Saturday night. Ho leaves for Queenstown and Central Otago to-morrow.

Mr J. Reid, local stationmaster, has received official advice that he has been promoted to the position of goods agent at Dunedin. Though Mr Reid has been stationed in Invercargill for only 18 months, he has proved himself a most courteous and popular Government official, and his impending departure will be undoubtedly regretted by the travelling public as well as by a large section of the commercial community, the members of which have repeatedly been brought, into close touch with him. Mr Reid leaves for Dunedin ou Saturday.

A very pleasant evening was held at the residence of Mr and Mrs G. McLeod, Ardwick street, on Saturday evening, when the members of the Gore District Highland Society’s Pipe Band met after band'practice to make a presentation in recognition of the hospitality shown during the year by Mr and Mrs McLeod. Mr Andrew Foubister, in presenting a cake stand to Mrs McLeod, mentioned that the band was indebted to their hosts for kindly allowing band practices to be held at their house, everything in the form of comfort being provided, including supper prepared by Mrs McLeod. Mr Foubister asked Mr and Mrs McLeod to accept the season’s greetings from the members of the band, several of whom also spoke. Mr McLeod suitably replied, stating that the members of the band were always welcome at. his home.

There was a gathering of over 40 people at the residence of Mr and Mrs A. IL Aitken, Hyde street, Gore, on Saturday evening in honour of Mr and Mrs A. H. W. Aitken, who were recently married. Mr F. L. McFarlane, on behalf of those assembled and also many who were unable to be present, made a presentation to Mr and Mrs Aitken, junior, of some crystal ware and a copper tray. Both were well-known and highly esteemed citizens, he said, and he wished them every success. Tributes were also paid by Messrs W. L. McGoldrick, P. R. Stewart, A. S. Fleming, J. Adams and O. Howells. The toast of Mr and Mrs Aitken, senior, was proposed by Mr A. S. Fleming, and was supported by Messrs Stewart and McGoldrick, reference being made to Mr Aitken’s splendid record as a business man and to the kindly nature of both. During the evening songs and recitations were contributed by Messrs A. Crawford, A. H. Aitken, P. R. Stewart, B. Ostlund, J. Gardiner and Fogarty.
