BLUFF NOTES
(From Our Correspondent.) On Sunday evening last in St. Matthew’s Anglican Church his Lordship Bishop Richards, of Dunedin, held a confirmation service, the Rev. W. W. Ewart, of St. Matthew’s, assisting. A large congregation attended. Before the confirmation his Lordship gave an inspiring address appropriate to the occasion, and the service was rendered still more impressive by the fine singing of a largo choir under the leadership of Mr E. A. Nichol. Miss D. Lovett presided at the organ. The Bishop returned to Dunedin on Monday. During hie stay in Bluff he was the guest of Mr and Mrs Ewart at the vicarage, Barin street. Miss Queenie Stewart, a former and very popular resident of Bluff, returned by the Maheno on Monday morning after a long sojourn in Melbourne. She is staying with her relatives, Mr and Mrs T. Stewart, Henderson street. Another well-known resident to return by the Maheno was Mr A. Crocket, of Barrow street. Mr Crocket has been on an extended visit to Newport, Victoria, which town his mother and other relatives reside.
A strong supporter of the Awarua Boating Club, who wishes to remain anonymous, has donated a valuable trophy to that body for competition by’ the youths’ pairs. The races are to take place in January after the local regatta. As there will be ten pairs competing, residents are assured of seeing some exciting contests.
On Saturday evening last the initiation team of Star of Bluff Lodge 1.0.0. F., winners of the shield in the recent Southland Central District competition, paid a fraternal visit to Hokonui Lodge, Gore, for the purpose of holding an initiation ceremony. The team was composed of N.G. Bro. H. Fincher; V.G., Bro. J. King; J.P.G., Bro. S. Craw; sec., Bro. F. W. McDonald; P.G., Bro. G. Johnston; warden, Bro. A. Nicholson; chaplain, Bro. C. Parry; R.S.N.G., Bro. G. Randall; L.S.N.G., Bro. W. Williamson; R.S.V.G., Bro. C. Bewley; L.S.V.G., Bro. J. Jamieson; 1.G., Bro. J. Tait; 0.G., Bro. J. Doyle; 0.C., Bro. N. W. McGorlick; R.S.S., Bro. C. Tonkinson; L.S.S., Bro. R. Barnett ; organist, Bro. R. Brown; floor officers, Bros. A. E. Budd, W. Oxley’, F. Barford, T. Driscoll, J. Williamson, C. Rapsey, T. F. Doyle and C. Hunter. The visitors were welcomed by the N.G., Bro. Ritchie, and his officers of Hokonui Lodge, who later complimented the team on its impressive performance of the ceremony. Bros. King and Fincher, in replying, invited their hosts to visit the Star of Bluff Lodge. P.G., Bro. McKay (Aroha) and V.G.j, Bro. Dawson (Pioneer) also responded on behalf of their representative lodges. After the ceremony’ a social hour was held, during which the usual toasts were honoured. Items were contributed by Bros. Budd, Fincher and McKay.
At the Town Hall on Monday night a large crowd attended the Catholic social, the time being spent in dancing, a card tournament and competitions. The proceeds were in aid of the Convent funds, which will be materially swelled by the night’s takings. The officials were: Messrs W. Hardie (M.C.), A. Lee (cards), W. Butler, M. Kelly, T. Greaney and L. Mortimer. Music was supplied by’ Harvey’s Orchestra. Winners in the euchre tournament were: Ladies: Mrs E. Murphy 1, Mrs Applegarth 2, Mrs J. Hotton 3. Men: Mr W. Connelly 1, Mr T. Pasco 2, Mr M. Wixon 3. Other prizes were won by Mrs H. Moss and Mr E. Campbell.
