EAST INDIES SQUADRON
DESTROYERS LEAVE FOR AUCKLAND.
CRUISER JAVA DELAYED
(Per United Press Association.)
Wellington, October 21,
The departure for Auckland of the East Indies Squadron which was timed for 8 a.m. to-day, was delayed owing to a defect in the engine room of the cruiser Java. When steam was being raised it ’ was discovered that there was a fracture in one of the main steam pipes. Repairs were put in hand at once, the sailing -of the squadron being postponed first till mid-day and then till later in the afternoon.
In the meantime the destroyers Evertren and de Ruyter left the King’s Wharf and went to an anchorage in the stream. Later it was found that the Java’s repairs would take longer than first thought and the destroyers departed about 5.30 p.m. under easy steam. It was hoped to have the Java ready to sail at midnight.
THE JAVA SAILS. Wellington, October 22. The Java got away at 1.30 this morning. The squadron is ,due at Auckland at 8 o’clock on Friday morning, and spends four days there before leaving for Sourabaya.
