BLUFF NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) Miss G. Budd of Oamaru, is at present on a visit to Mr A. E. 'Budd (her unde) and Mrs Budd, Slaney street. Mr A. Crocket was a passenger by the Maheno for Melbourne yesterday. He will be away for at least a month. While in Victoria Mr Crocket will stay with his mother and brother at Newport. The latter, Mr T. Crocket, was once a well-known resident of Bluff, and is particularly remembered as a stalwart of the local cricket club. . , i Recent guests at the Club Hotel included: Mr and Mrs Thompson, Miss Thompson, and Mr A. Smith (Dunedin); Miss I. Cockerall (Invercargill); Mr W. ’S. Bellamy (Invercargill) ; Mr) M. Larsen and Mr K. Larsen (Stewart Island); Mr T. Cahill (Oamaru); Mr W. Thomson (Pegasus) add Mr John Topi (Ruapuke). A most enjoyable card social and dance was given by the Maheno Social and Athletic Club in the Town Hall on Monday night. The officials of the club are'- Messrs R. Burns (president), W. H. Searle (chairman), C. W. Anderson (secretary), and G. Martin (M.C.). The orchestra, known as the Tasman Five, is composed’of Messrs R. Canning, conductor (piano), M. O’Connor and G. Britton (violins), A. ' Laker (banjo), and M. Rooke (cello). The music of the “five” is excellent. This is the second dance given by the club in Bluff and the large attendance testified to its growing popularity. On future visits of the Maheno similar evenings will be held when time permits, and these will doubtless prove equally attractive to local dancers. On arrival in Melbourne the club is booked to give a ball in the suburb of Ripponleq, when the musicians will be reinforced by. another orchestra. The way in which these socials are conducted reflects great -credit on the responsible officials. Several members of the J. C. Williamson Company travelling- on board the- Maheno gave items which were much appreciated. Euchre prizes for thg night were won by Mrs M. McTigue (ladies) and Mr G. Silvester (men’s). (
