In spite of the heavy gale in the Straits the Tamatea arrived from Stewart Island at 9.55 a.m. yesterday. Weather permitting, she sails for the Island again at 10.15 a.m. to-day, returning on Friday. After discharging her cargo of coal the Union Company’s collier Opihi yesterday loaded a quantity of timber and general cargo for northern ports'. She was timed to sail for Dunedin at 1 a.m. to-day. One of the few bright spots in the world’s markets to-day is that of the Norwegian whaling industry. The production of the 1929-30 season was 1,720,775 barrels of oil, an increase of 55 per cent, on the previous year. This season the Antarctic whalers have sailed unusually early, and owing to recent enlargements of existing floating factories and construction of new ships, a substantial increase in whale oil production is anticipated. Nevertheless, - all except 500,000 barrels of this season’s oil has already been sold at a price of £25 per ton.
While the Port Brisbane, which visited Dunedin recently, was in England on her last trip, she was fitted with Buer Waak turbines. These turbines are fitted to each of her twin shafts, and utilize the exhaust steam’from the main reciprocating engines. The vessel is now doing a knot to a knot, and a-half better than previously on the same consumption of coal. The British tanker Lustrous is reported to have sailed from Los Angeles on October 1 under charter to the Atlantic Union Oil Company. Her bulk oil cargo is for discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton and Sydney. She is expected at Auckland about, the middle of this week. Also Under charter to the Atlantic Union Oil Company the Norwegian tanker Sommerttad is scheduled to load at Los Angeles during December for Auckland, Wellington, Melbourne and Sydney. The .tanker Athelqueen is to load at San Pedro on November 6 for Wellington. The Athelqueen, which is of 8780 tons gross Register, was built in 1928'by the Furness Shipbuilding Company, Ltd., Haverton, Hill-on-Tees. Other "4thel” vessels which have recently been at Wellington are the Athelregent and the Atheltemplar. MAHENO DELAYED. Owing to weather conditions the Union Steam Ship Company’s intercolonial steamer Maheno did not sail yesterday morning as anticipated. She was- later expected to leave at 1 a.m. to-day for Melbourne direct.. . -
