NIUE ISLAND NATIVES

HARD TIMES BEING EXPERIENCED..

EFFECTS OF SEVERE DROUGHT. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, October 21. Advice has been received by Sir Apirana Ngata from the. Resident Commissioner at Niue that the island is suffering from the effects of severe drought conditions' which have prevailed for some months. Copra prices are at a very low level, the latest London quotation for Niue copra being the lowest for 35 years. Recent shipments of bananas have been severely curtailed, purely on account of hurricane conditions, and the people are reduced at present to depending on the banana shipments for cash to buy goods to supplement their own food supplies. They are feeling the pinch of hard times to an extent not generally realized by the New Zealand public.
