VICE-REGAL. Their Excellencies Lord and Lady Blerljsloe, arrived at Hastings by the mail train on Monday evening and were greeted by a large erod'd at the station. The High School Cadets formed a guard of honour which his Excellency inspected, speaking to one or two of the boys. Later their Excellencies were motored to the residence of Mr Gordon Pharazyn where they will stay during their visit to Hastings. Monday evening was free. Yesterday morning their Excellencies visited the Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, the Free Kindergarten, the High School and the Women’s Rest Room and in the afternoor. Lord and Lady Blcdisloe were officially welcomed at Cornwall Park. Last evening a conversazione was held in the Assembly Hall—Press Association telegram.

The death has occurred at Wellington of the Rev. A. H. Collins, well-known minister in the Baptist Church, states a Press Association message. He retired some little time ago but recently acted for a while as minister at Island Bay. He formerly conducted the ministry in Taranaki. Reference to the death of Mr Thomas Fleming was made at the meeting of the City Council last evening by the Mayor (Mr J. D. Campbell) and the following resolution was carried: ‘.‘That this council place on record its deep regret at tho passing of the late Thomas Fleming, who was Mayor of Invercargill in 1886 and 1889 and councillor from 1883 to 1886 and frqm 1909 to 1913, and that the council’s sympathy be conveyed to the relatives.” The death occurred yesterday of tho Rev. James Russell Wilford, aged 27 years, the eldest son of Canon J. R. Wilford, Christchurch, states a Press Association telegram. Mr Wilford, an old boy of Christ’s College, entered Christ’s College, Cambridge, in 1923, and graduated in 1926 after a brilliant career. He was ordained at Trinity in 1927 with a title to the parish of St. Barnabas, Southampton. 111-health compelled his return to New Zealand last year.

The death is reported from Wellington by Press Association telegram of Captain Robert Leech. He went to sea at an early age, serving an apprenticeship in the sailing ships of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company in which he served later as an officer. About 25 or 30 years ago he succeeded his father as harbourmaster at Westport where he was in charge until 1914 or 1915. During the war he was in the service of the Union Steam Ship Company as chief officer of the Katoa and Waitemata. About ten years ago he rejoined the service of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company for which he acted as chief stevedore at Wellington. On Monday when he went to consult a doctor ho suddenly died. Captain Leech leaves a widow and five sons.

A district pioneer in the person of Mr Carl Godfrey Gutschlag, Mary street, Gore, passed away on Sunday afternoon at tho advanced age of 80 years. The late Mr Gutschlag was a native of Germany, and arrived in the Dominion in 1884, landing at Port Chalmers. Soon after arrival ho went to Gore, and settled on a small holding near McNab. After a few years’ residence there he purchased a farm on the Pukerau side of Benio. He carried on this successfully until 1908, when he sold out and took up his residence at Gore, where he had lived since. During his residence at Benio he took a keen interest in the School Committee, of which he was a member. His wife predeceased him. about six years ago, and he leaves two sons and three daughters (all married) —William (Waimumu), Fred (Greenvale), and Mesdamcs J. Hanke (Caversham), Sasse (Green Island) and McLenaghan (Gore).
