A Story With a Moral. —The Plot Thickens.— After a carefully planned set of tactics, Little white lies and an army of black tricks, Algernon Charles with much pleasure agreed To let Chloris and Rudolph invite him to
feed; And with all the preliminaries safely put through The three were delighted: Algernon, who Was lion, and Chloris bedecked in new
raiment And Rudolph who had to look after the payment.
Thus a triangular contest was started In which competition was keen and whole
hearted With Chloris conducting a costly campaign To gain as adherent a nobly-born swain, While Algernon Charles was prepared to be
chased As long as accounts for the parties weren’t
placed Before him and Rudolph was never a kicker As long as the meetings abounded in liquor.
Meantime, though the pace was much hotter than Tophet, Algernon’s boss ran his pub at a profit,' , For all the Young Things drank for chances to know The barman who seemed to be Chloris s beau, While orders for drink he insisted were sent To the pub. and on them he drew so much per cent.; * But the pair didn’t worry how much they Were spending— To the finances father’s account was attending.
And then came the time, all the scheme had gone placid, When Algernon had to submit to the acid, Or, crudely, if he ■would to come up to the
scratch And be ready with Chloris to make it a
match. Algernon Charles with the grace of a lord, Amused, but, with dignity, just a bit bored, And told them although he enjoyed their
society To their level he could not descend with propriety.
Although they were rich and their parents were landed, He knew not their forebears, in fact, to be Candid They’d sprung up like mushrooms, and ' they could -see he Belonged to an ancient, proud family tree, And they, earnest students of family pride, Knew that the chasm between them was wide And so their true feelings they kept a strict guard on, And begged with humility Algernon’s pardon.
