MR SNOWDEN OPTIMISTIC.

CONVERSION OPERATIONS. z (British Official Wireless.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Rugby, October 16. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, *Mr Philip Snowden, speaking at the Lord Mayor’s dinner at the Mansion House last night, stated that he intended to carry out large conversion operations when he thought the time favourable. . Mr Snowden spoke optimistically regarding Britain’s financial position and" prospects. He said lhe British were apt to consider their position as exceptionally bad. That certainly was not the case. It was a wonder they had withstood the world blast so well, and they wets now suffering less than some of the other great industrial countries. During the last six months Britain had maintained a larger proportion of her production than, for instance, Germany or the United States. Mr Snowden said he would - do everything possible to avoid imposing new taxation.
